Uttar Pradesh: A recent surge in incidents involving transgenders allegedly forcefully demanding money from passengers on UP Roadways buses has sparked widespread debate on public safety and law enforcement measures. Commuters have voiced concerns about their safety, urging authorities to take immediate action to curb such activities.

Passengers traveling on various UP Roadways buses have reported multiple instances of groups of transgenders boarding buses and aggressively demanding money. Some passengers claim that refusal to pay has led to verbal abuse and, in some cases, physical intimidation. These incidents, occurring in broad daylight, have raised serious questions about security and the role of authorities in maintaining law and order.

Regular commuters, including students, women, and elderly passengers, have expressed fear and distress over such occurrences. “It has become a routine experience. They board the bus, ask for money, and if someone refuses, they create a scene or even resort to threats,” said a passenger traveling from Lucknow to Kanpur.

Many believe that while the transgender community has long relied on traditional means of collecting money, such as blessings and festivities, the recent aggressive behavior crosses the line of ethical solicitation and enters the realm of extortion.

Transport officials and law enforcement agencies have taken note of the complaints. A UP Roadways spokesperson acknowledged the problem, stating, “We have received multiple complaints and are working with the police to ensure passengers feel safe while traveling.”

Authorities have reportedly instructed bus conductors and drivers to immediately report any such incidents to the police. Some officials have also suggested deploying law enforcement officers on frequently affected routes to deter such activities.

Public opinion remains divided on how to address the issue. While some argue for stricter legal measures, others emphasize the need for sensitization programs and rehabilitation efforts for marginalized transgender individuals who may resort to such means due to lack of employment opportunities.

Activists suggest that the government should work towards creating better livelihood opportunities for the transgender community while simultaneously enforcing public safety laws more effectively. “A balanced approach is required—one that addresses public safety concerns without further marginalizing the transgender community,” stated a social worker advocating for transgender rights.

The growing incidents of forced money collection on UP Roadways buses highlight an urgent need for intervention from both law enforcement and social welfare departments. Stricter regulations, combined with long-term rehabilitation measures, could help ensure a safer commuting experience while also addressing the underlying socio-economic issues that contribute to such activities. Until then, passengers remain on edge, hoping for swift action to restore order and security on public transport.
