LUCKNOW: Jailed mafia gangster Mukhtar Ansari, aged 63, passed away due to a cardiac attack while receiving treatment at Banda medical college on Thursday night.
Ansari, a former five-time MLA from Mau Sadar seat, had been behind bars in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab since 2005, with a total of 65 criminal cases pending against him.
According to a senior police officer, Ansari was taken to the emergency department of Rani Durgavati Medical College in Banda in an unconscious state by jail staff after he complained of nausea.Despite the efforts of a team of nine doctors, he succumbed to a cardiac arrest, officials said.
Security measures were heightened in Ansari’s home district of Ghazipur and the neighbouring Mau district. Prohibitory orders under CrPC Sec 144 were imposed across UP following Ansari’s death, UP DGP Prashant Kumar said, adding there was special deployment of cops in Banda, Mau, Ghazipur and Varanasi districts.
On Tuesday morning, Ansari was found unconscious and was taken to the district hospital after complaining of abdominal pain and constipation. He was discharged after 15 hours of treatment. Last week, Ansari’s lawyer Randheer Singh Suman had filed an application in a court in Barabanki requesting a thorough medical examination, alleging that “slow poisoning” was being administered to him by the prison staff at Banda jail.
Ansari had been convicted in eight cases within a span of just 18 months, two of which resulted in life sentences. Following the Supreme Court’s directive, he had been transferred to Banda jail in April 2021 from Ropar jail in Punjab.
