The medal rush from the sport of weightlifting continued for India at the Commonwealth Games 2022 as Jeremy Lalrinnunga clinched gold in the men’s 67kg category. With his win, the 19-year-old created a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch event, by picking up 140kg. He lifted a total of 160kg in the clean and jerk segment to finish with a grand total of 300kg. At the end of his final attempt, the youngster looked injured. However, at the podium, when he was presented the yellow metal as the Indian national anthem played in the background, Jeremy appeared in great spirit. He shared his winning moment on social media and wrote, “Lifting three hundred over my shoulder wouldn’t have been possible without the strength of my nation backing me. 🏋️‍♂️ This Gold is just the beginning!” Samoa’s veteran lifter Vaipava Ioane won the silver while Nigeria’s Edidiong Umoafia took home the bronze medal. Hailing from Aizawl in Mizoram, Jeremy had won the gold in the 62kg event at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games and also won a gold in the 67kg category in the Commonwealth Championships last year.
