Dadasaheb Phalke Awards; Mithun 54th winner
Mithun Chakraborty will be honored with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony, taking place on October 8. He is the 54th recipient of this esteemed award, established in 1969 to celebrate the legacy of Dadasaheb Phalke, recognized as the father of Indian cinema. Prior to Chakraborty, 53 distinguished figures from Bollywood, cinema, and music, including legends like Raj Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, and Yash Chopra, have been honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Notably, actor Waheeda Rehman was the recipient of the award in 2021.

Born Gourang Chakraborty on June 16, 1950, in Kolkata, West Bengal, Mithun earned the National Film Award for Best Actor for his very first film, “Mrigayaa” (1976). An alumnus of the esteemed Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), he honed his skills and laid the groundwork for his remarkable career in cinema.
Mithun Chakraborty’s portrayal of a Santhal rebel in Mrinal Sen’s film earned him national recognition, marking a significant milestone in his career. He rose to immense popularity in the 1980s with his iconic role in “Disco Dancer” (1982), a film that achieved major success both in India and abroad, establishing him as a dancing sensation. This role not only highlighted his exceptional dancing abilities but also played a key role in popularizing disco music within Indian cinema. Additionally, his performance in “Agneepath” earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1990.
Mithun’s accolades continued as he secured two more National Film Awards for his roles in “Tahader Katha” (1992) and “Swami Vivekananda” (1998). Throughout his extensive career, he has appeared in over 350 films across various Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Odia, Bhojpuri, and Telugu. Renowned for his versatile performances, Mithun has excelled in genres ranging from action and drama to comedy, earning several awards, including three National Film Awards for Best Actor.
