The near-fatal accident happened at Narsan in Haridwar district, about 90km from Dehradun. The vehicle went up in flames moments later and was reduced to a mangled, simmering heap. Pant managed to escape after breaking the windscreen. Results of an MRI of the brain and spinal cord were ‘normal’.

According to police, Pant was driving alone in his car when it hit divider railings on the Delhi-Dehradun highway at roughly 5. 22am. The vehicle rolled over a few times before catching fire.
Pant somehow managed to come out of the burning four-wheeler before being helped by a driver and conductor of a Haryana roadways bus which was about 50m behind.
Swapan Kumar Singh, SP (Haridwar-rural), who was involved in the rescue work, said, “Responding promptly to the bus driver’s SoS, police from Narsan checkpost reached the site. They rushed Pant to a nearby hospital with the help of passersby. After receiving preliminary medical attention, the cricketer was referred to a higher health centre in Dehradun.”

Singh further said, “Pant had dozed off at the wheel. He told this to doctors and cops at Narsan. He also said that he had planned to surprise his mother at home. He was lucky to have survived such a major accident. He is now undergoing treatment at Dehradun Max Hospital. His condition is stable and is out of danger.”
A medical bulletin issued by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in coordination with the Max Hospital doctors stated, “Pant has suffered two cuts on his forehead, a ligament tear in his right knee along with injuries on his right wrist, ankle, toe and back.”

A medical team member attending to the cricketer told TOI: “His condition is being monitored by DrGaurav Gupta of the orthopaedics department. Pant is stable, not suffering from any life-threatening injury. He is accompanied by his mother in the hospital.”
Speaking on the severity of Pant’s injuries, Dr Qamar Azam who looks after sports injury department at AIIMS-Rishikesh said, “Pant will take at least three to six months to recover from ligament injury. And if it’s severe, he may take more time. Further evaluation can be based on his detailed injury report.”
This puts a serious question mark over Pant’s availability for the home Test series against Australia, starting February 9. He has been a vital cog in India’s successful run in Tests in the past two years. He is also likely to miss the IPL. Pant was part of the Indian cricket team that had won the Test series against Bangladesh 2-0 earlier this month.
Didn’t know who he was: Bus driver who rushed to save Pant
Sushil Kumar, the driver of the Haryana Roadways bus, and his conductor Paramjeet Nain were the first ones to rush towards star cricketer Rishabh Pant’s mangled car to help him. Kumar was also the one who called police on emergency number 112 to inform them about the near-fatal accident early on Friday. Speaking to TOI, Kumar, a Haryana resident, said he is “still in shock” with what he witnessed.
“I was driving towards Delhi, when suddenly I saw a speeding car hit the divider railing and roll towards the opposite side before turning into a ball of fire. Thinking that the car would crash into our bus, I hit the brakes about 50m away from it and rushed towards the car along with (conductor) Nain. I wasn’t aware who the driver was and safely pulled him away from the car. Later, I came to know that he was Rishabh Pant, a member of the Indian cricket team, but I didn’t recognise him as I don’t follow cricket much,” said Kumar.
He added that he then informed the police who came within 10 minutes to the accident site while Nain called an ambulance. Kumar, who collected Pant’s valuables and handed them over to him in the ambulance, said the Almighty was with Pant.
“All I could say is that the Almighty wanted us to save him. He (God) made us do all this to save a life without even knowing who he was.”
Though the driver failed to recognise Pant, some of the passengers in his bus who followed him to the badly crushed vehicle recognised the cricketer at once.
