BJP Urges Public Participation in Nationwide Mock Drills Amid Heightened Security Concerns Post-Pahalgam Attack
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday appealed to its workers, leaders, supporters, and citizens across India to actively participate in a nationwide mock security exercise scheduled for May 7. The drills aim to evaluate and enhance the country’s preparedness against evolving security threats.
In a social media post, the BJP encouraged its cadre to volunteer in the initiative, stating, “Appeal to all citizens, BJP karyakartas and leaders to come forward and volunteer. Your participation will make all the difference.” The appeal was shared alongside a notification from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), which is spearheading the effort.
The MHA has directed all states and union territories to conduct mock drills to assess the effectiveness of civil defence mechanisms. These coordinated exercises are intended to test emergency response protocols and reinforce public safety during potential crises.
Key Components of the Mock Drills:
- Blackout measures and early-stage camouflaging of critical infrastructure
- Evacuation plan rehearsals and civilian safety training
- Activation of radio-communication systems and hotlines with the Indian Air Force (IAF)
- Testing of control rooms and shadow control rooms to ensure seamless coordination
Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan is also scheduled to review civil defence preparations, including readiness for air-raid scenarios, bunker maintenance, and public awareness training.
Rising Tensions with Pakistan
This large-scale preparedness exercise follows the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, where 26 people, primarily tourists, were killed in a suspected Pakistan-linked terrorist operation. In the aftermath, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice, stating they would be pursued “to the ends of the earth” and punished “beyond their imagination.”
The mock drills reflect India’s commitment to bolstering national security and civil defence capabilities in the face of complex and emerging threats.
