A tragic accident on the Delhi-Lucknow highway claimed the lives of two young women when their car collided with a container truck. The incident occurred on Tuesday night while the group of four friends, returning from Nainital, was on their way home to Rohtak, Haryana. The two deceased girls, Shivani and Simran, were passengers in the car, while the other two friends, Rahul and Sanju, were severely injured and are currently receiving treatment.
The collision took place when their car, attempting to take a turn toward Delhi, was struck by a truck coming from the opposite direction. According to Ranvijay Singh, Superintendent of Police in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, the truck was heading toward Rampur from Delhi when the accident occurred. The car, trying to exit a bypass, was hit on its right side by the container truck, which was loaded with cement pipes. The impact was so severe that the car was nearly crushed, and the right side of the vehicle was badly damaged.
The four friends were trapped inside the car because all the doors were locked. The delay in rescuing them lasted for nearly an hour, as it took over a dozen people to break open the car and pull the victims out. While two of them, Shivani and Simran, died before help arrived, Rahul and Sanju were rescued and rushed to the hospital.
Eyewitness Rajesh Kumar, who assisted in getting one of the injured to the hospital, described the collision, saying, “The car was crossing the road when the truck hit them.” The container truck, after the collision, overturned on the highway, adding to the chaos.
Upon investigating the incident, the police found that the driver of the car had likely been following Google Maps. The mobile phone found inside the vehicle had the map application open, which, according to the authorities, might have led the driver to take the wrong turn, resulting in the fatal accident.
The police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident and are examining whether the use of navigation apps contributed to the wrong turn that led to the crash.
