In the wake of the recently announced ceasefire between India and Pakistan, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has penned a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, advocating for an immediate special session of Parliament. The session aims to deliberate on the Pahalgam terror attack, the subsequent Operation Sindoor, and the ceasefire agreement, which was first disclosed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
“Dear Prime Minister, I reiterate the unanimous request of the Opposition to convene a special session of Parliament immediately. It is crucial for the people and their representatives to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, and today’s ceasefire, first announced by U.S. President Trump. This will also be an opportunity to demonstrate our collective resolve to meet the challenges ahead,” Mr. Gandhi wrote.
Echoing this sentiment, Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress chief and Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, also addressed a letter to the Prime Minister. He emphasized the necessity of a special session to discuss the recent developments, including the ceasefire announcements from Washington D.C., and later by the governments of India and Pakistan.
The ceasefire, brokered by the United States, was announced by President Trump on May 10, 2025, following intense military exchanges between the two nations. Trump stated, “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE.” Subsequently, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance engaged with Indian and Pakistani leadership to solidify the agreement.
Approximately thirty minutes after the U.S. announcement, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that the Directors General of Military Operations from both countries agreed to halt all military actions across land, air, and sea as of 1700 hours IST on Saturday. Further discussions between the DGMOs are scheduled for May 12 at 1200 hours.
Despite the ceasefire, tensions remain high. India has warned Pakistan against violating the agreement, following reports of artillery fire on the Indian side of Kashmir shortly after the truce began. The conflict, which escalated after a terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir, led to India’s Operation Sindoor, targeting alleged terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan. Both nations have since claimed victory, with India highlighting the success of its military operations and Pakistan praising its armed forces’ resilience.
The Opposition’s call for a special Parliament session underscores the need for transparency and collective deliberation on national security matters. As the situation evolves, the government’s response to these requests remains to be seen.
