As of June 5, 2025, seven fatalities have been reported due to COVID-19, with the active cases in the country totaling 4,866, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare data.

India has reported a concerning uptick in COVID-19 cases, with 564 new infections and 7 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours. This brings the active case tally to 4,866, marking a notable increase from previous weeks. Among the fatalities, a 5-month-old infant from Delhi was among the deceased, highlighting the virus’s potential impact on all age groups .

The surge in cases is not confined to a single region. Kerala has reported the highest number of active cases, with 1,487 individuals currently infected. Delhi follows closely with 562 active cases, while Maharashtra has 526. Other states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal are also witnessing increases in active cases, though at a slightly lower scale.

Health experts are closely monitoring the emergence of new variants, particularly the Omicron subvariant JN.1. While the subvariant has been detected in several states, including Kerala, it has not yet led to a significant rise in hospitalizations or deaths. However, its high transmissibility rate remains a concern, prompting authorities to urge continued vigilance and adherence to preventive measures .

Central Government Hospitals in Delhi and with representatives from all States and UTs to evaluate the current COVID-19 situation and preparedness measures.

In light of the rising cases, the Indian government has directed states and union territories to enhance their healthcare preparedness. This includes ensuring adequate hospital infrastructure, increasing testing capacities, and promoting public awareness campaigns. Additionally, health authorities are emphasizing the importance of vaccination, mask-wearing, and social distancing to curb the spread of the virus .

The Ministry of Health continues to advise the public to remain cautious. Individuals are encouraged to wear masks in crowded places, maintain hand hygiene, and avoid unnecessary travel. Those experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, or shortness of breath are urged to seek medical attention promptly and undergo testing. Vaccination remains the most effective tool in preventing severe illness, and eligible individuals are encouraged to get vaccinated or receive booster doses as recommended.

While the current situation is concerning, the government’s proactive measures and public cooperation can help mitigate the impact of this resurgence. Continued vigilance and adherence to health guidelines are essential in controlling the spread of COVID-19 and protecting public health.
