Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked during a public meeting. Police have confirmed that the prime accused is now in custody. Get the latest updates on the incident.

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Assaulted During Public Grievance Meeting, Suspect in Custody

Incident Overview

On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was the target of an attack during her weekly public grievance session—or “Jansunwai”—held at her official Civil Lines residence. The incident occurred at around 8 a.m., when a man posing as a complainant suddenly launched an assault on the Chief Minister, resulting in widespread alarm and immediate action by security staff.

Sequence of Events

Eyewitnesses describe the sequence as follows: the suspect approached CM Gupta under the guise of submitting documents—possibly related to a jailed relative—and handed over some papers. Suddenly, he began pulling her hand and, amid ensuing chaos, inflicted a light injury to her head as she was jostled in the scuffle. Contrary to earlier sensational reports, the BJP has clarified that she was not slapped, but did sustain a minor blow. Security personnel and nearby attendees quickly subdued the man and he was taken into custody.

Attacker’s Identity & Motive

Authorities have identified the assailant as Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya, a 41-year-old resident of Rajkot, Gujarat. Initial interrogation revealed that he had traveled to Delhi with a petition concerning a jailed relative, suggesting his motive may have been personal rather than political. His mother has described him as an animal lover distressed by recent stray dog control measures, potentially linking emotional factors to the incident. Delhi Police are coordinating with Gujarat authorities to verify his credentials and background.

Chief Minister’s Condition

Doctors have examined CM Gupta and confirmed that she sustained only minor injuries—mainly a light blow to the head—and remains stable. She is under observation at a hospital but has reportedly expressed her determination to continue her public programs without interruption.

Political and Public Reaction

Political leaders across the board have condemned the attack:

  • BJP leaders, including Virendra Sachdeva and Manjinder Singh Sirsa, described the assault as a serious threat to democratic norms and hinted at a possible political motive behind it—even while acknowledging gaps in security arrangements.
  • Former Delhi CM and AAP leader Atishi denounced the violence, stating, “In a democracy, there is space for disagreement, but absolutely no place for violence,” while urging strict action against perpetrators.
  • Arvind Kejriwal, AAP national convenor, echoed these sentiments on social media, emphasizing that such aggression has no room in democratic discourse and expressing confidence in the police’s response.
  • Congress leaders also described the event as deeply distressing, raising questions about the safety of both public figures and everyday citizens in similar settings.

Security Reassessment Underway

The incident has triggered immediate scrutiny of existing security protocols at public hearings. Police have launched an internal investigation, overseen by Commissioner SBK Singh, to assess how an assailant breached high-level security and what can be learned to prevent future incidents.Meanwhile, security deployment around the CM’s residence has been visibly intensified.

This alarming episode has reignited debates over the delicate balance between accessibility and safety for public officials. CM Gupta’s decision to continue hosting Jansunwai sessions, even after the attack, has earned widespread admiration—but also reignited concerns about whether such public forums can be conducted securely.
