32 Airports Reopen for Civil Operations Amid India-Pakistan Ceasefire
India’s aviation regulator has announced the reopening of 32 airports across northern and northwestern regions, previously closed due to airspace restrictions amid escalating tensions with Pakistan. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) confirmed that civil aircraft operations have resumed following a ceasefire between the two countries.
The affected airports, including Srinagar, Chandigarh, Amritsar, and Jaisalmer, are now operational after being shut down in response to Pakistan’s retaliatory strikes against India’s Operation Sindoor — a targeted airstrike against terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
“Attention Flyers: Airports previously closed for civil operations until 05:29 hrs on 15 May 2025, are now available for immediate resumption of services,” the AAI stated. The advisory also urged passengers to verify flight schedules directly with airlines and monitor official websites for real-time updates.
Major airlines, including IndiGo and SpiceJet, have resumed operations at the reopened airports. The list of affected airports also included key locations such as Adhampur, Awantipur, Bhuj, Bikaner, Leh, Pathankot, Rajkot, and Uttarlai.
The airspace restrictions were initially implemented after India launched Operation Sindoor in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians. India closed its airspace to Pakistani aircraft on April 30, citing evidence of Pakistan using civilian aircraft as shields for potential strikes.
Pakistan countered by closing its own airspace to civil airlines and launching drone and missile attacks on Indian military bases and civilian infrastructure. Indian forces successfully intercepted several of these strikes, averting major damage.
The ceasefire, announced on Saturday, follows multiple rounds of military and diplomatic engagements and is aimed at de-escalating tensions in the region.
