A BJP leader from Haryana’s Sonipat, Surendra Jawahar, was shot dead by his neighbor inside a shop on Friday night following a long-standing land dispute. The accused, identified as Monu, fired at least two bullets at Jawahar before fleeing the scene, officials said.
The shocking incident, which took place around 9:30 pm, was captured on CCTV. Footage shows Monu pushing Jawahar into a shop and pointing a gun at his head. Jawahar was heard screaming, “Maar diya maar diya” (He’s killed me), as two to three people attempted to intervene. Despite their efforts, Monu fired the shots and escaped.
Jawahar died on the spot.
The accused was arrested on Saturday morning. A preliminary police investigation revealed that the dispute stemmed from Jawahar purchasing land from Monu’s uncle and aunt. Since the transaction, tensions had been escalating between the two, with Monu allegedly warning Jawahar not to set foot on the land. On Friday, when Jawahar visited the property in an attempt to resolve the issue, an enraged Monu chased him and ultimately shot him.
“Yesterday, we received information that a gunshot was fired in Jawahra village, leading to the death of Surendra Jawahar. The victim had purchased land from the accused’s relatives, and the dispute over it resulted in this fatal attack,” a senior police official stated.
Jawahar’s body has been sent for post-mortem, and the accused is currently being questioned, police confirmed.
Meanwhile, in neighboring Punjab, another political leader, Shiv Sena’s Mangat Rai Manga, was shot dead in Moga on Thursday night. Three attackers on a bike first fired at the outfit’s district unit president, but the bullet missed and hit a 12-year-old boy. Manga attempted to escape on a two-wheeler, but the attackers pursued him and successfully shot him during the chase. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Officials reported that three people have been arrested in connection with Manga’s killing.
