India’s Travel Advisory: Indian Tourists Urged to Avoid 7 Thai Provinces Amid Thailand–Cambodia Border Clashes

H2: Rising Tensions Along the Thailand–Cambodia Border Trigger Safety Alert

On July 25, 2025, the Indian Embassy in Thailand issued an urgent travel advisory to its nationals, urging them not to visit seven specific provinces in Thailand due to escalating armed clashes with Cambodia along their shared border.

In view of the situation near Thailand-Cambodia border, all Indian travelers to Thailand are advised to check updates from Thai official sources, including TAT Newsroom.

According to the embassy’s official post on X (formerly Twitter), “In view of the situation near the Thailand–Cambodia border, all Indian travellers to Thailand are advised to check updates from Thai official sources, including TAT Newsroom”. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) confirmed that attractions in the affected provinces are not recommended for visiting at this time.

Which Provinces and Tourist Areas Are Under Advisory?

Indian and other foreign tourists have been advised to avoid travel to the following seven Thai border provinces:

  • Ubon Ratchathani
  • Surin
  • Sisaket
  • Buriram
  • Sa Kaeo
  • Chanthaburi
  • Trat

In Ubon Ratchathani, for example, visitors are specifically warned away from Phu Chong‑Na Yoi National Park and Kaeng Lamduan, both located within 40 km of the Cambodian border. Border temples such as Ta Muen Thom and Ta Krabey have also been highlighted as potentially high-risk areas.

H2: Humanitarian Impact & Violence Reported

The advisory follows a severe escalation of hostilities, including cross-border artillery and rocket exchanges:

  • At least 14 Thai nationals, including 13 civilians and one soldier, have been killed, while 46 others were injured.
  • Following a landmine blast on July 23, which injured Thai soldiers, armed clashes intensified on July 24–25.
  • Over 100,000 Thai citizens within 40 km of the border have been relocated for their own safety, along with thousands of Cambodians in adjacent areas.

The severity of the conflict led both countries to downgrade diplomatic relations, with ambassadors being recalled and expelled by each side.

H2: Wider Travel Impacts & Economic Fallout

The conflict has rattled Thailand’s tourism sector, leading to:

  • Surging cancellations, particularly from Indian and other Asian tourists to regions like Sa Kaeo — popular for its border-side attractions.
  • Travel agents reporting confusion and calls for domestic holiday alternatives from Indian travellers, including those from Kolkata.
  • Major tourism hubs such as Bangkok, Phuket, and Siem Reap/Angkor Wat remain operational and not directly affected, though anxiety is triggering broader cancellations and repositioning of travel plans.

Authorities including the UK Foreign Office also advise travellers to reconsider all but essential journeys within 50 km of the border, while confirming that flights and major airports remain functional.

H2: Travel Tips for Indian Nationals Planning Thailand Trips

  1. Avoid the seven Thai provinces listed above, plus border zones in Cambodia (OEadar Meanchey, Preah Vihear) where applicable.
  2. Monitor official updates via TAT Newsroom and Embassy of India in Thailand channels.
  3. If you have bookings or travel plans in affected areas, contact your tour operator or hotel—be aware that travel-insurance policies may exclude “acts of war”.
  4. Prefer domestic or alternate destinations until the situation stabilizes.
  5. Stay informed by tracking reputable news sources; the situation remains fluid and may evolve rapidly.
  • On July 25, 2025, the Indian Embassy in Thailand issued a public travel advisory, warning Indian nationals to avoid seven specific Thai provinces due to escalating border clashes with Cambodia.
  • Confirmed fatalities, mass evacuations, and diplomatic fallout underline the seriousness.
  • While popular southern tourism zones remain unaffected, the advice may impact broader travel sentiment and bookings.
  • Travellers should stay informed, avoid advisory zones, and consider alternatives until tensions ease.
