Indian Tourist in Nepal Pleads for Help as Mob Torches Hotel Amid Violent Protests

Introduction

Amid escalating unrest in Nepal, Indian tourists are finding themselves caught in the crossfire of violent protests. One such individual, Upasana Gill, a volleyball player from India, has made a desperate appeal for rescue after her hotel in Pokhara was set ablaze by protesters.

In a harrowing video message, Gill recounted her ordeal:

“I had come here to host a volleyball league, and currently, the hotel where I was staying has been burned down. All my luggage, all my belongings, were in my room, and the entire hotel was set on fire. I was in the spa, and people were running behind me with very large sticks, and I barely managed to escape with my life.”

She further emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that protesters were not sparing even tourists.

Background of the Protests

The protests, led by the youth group “Gen Z Nepal,” initially erupted in response to a government-imposed social media ban. However, the demonstrations have since expanded to address broader issues such as corruption and nepotism within the government. These protests have led to significant unr.

Impact on Tourists

Gill’s experience is not an isolated incident. Many Indian tourists have found themselves stranded in Nepal as a result of the ongoing protests. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has issued advisories urging Indian nationals to defer travel to Nepal and advising those already in the country to remain indoors and exercise caution.

Call for Assistance

In her video, Gill made a direct appeal to the Indian government:

“Indian government, please get all our people back. The situation is horrible in Nepal right now. Please.”

Her plea underscores the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate assistance for stranded tourists.

Government Response

The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has been actively coordinating with local authorities to ensure the safety of Indian nationals. Emergency helpline numbers have been provided to assist stranded citizens.

The ongoing protests in Nepal have created a perilous situation for both locals and foreign nationals. As the situation continues to evolve, it is imperative for tourists to stay informed and follow the guidance of local authorities and their respective embassies.
