Drunk Driving: Stricter Penalties

Drunk driving laws have become significantly stricter, with severe penalties now in place for offenders. First-time violators will face a fine of ₹10,000 and/or up to six months of imprisonment. Repeat offenders will be subjected to a ₹15,000 fine along with a mandatory two-year jail term. In a major push for road safety, fines for helmet and seatbelt violations have increased significantly. Two-wheeler riders caught without helmets will now face a fine of ₹1,000—10 times the previous penalty of ₹100. Additionally, their driver’s license may be suspended for up to three months.

Mobile Phone Use While Driving: Penalties

Using a mobile phone while driving is a dangerous habit that has become one of the leading causes of road accidents. Lack of vehicle insurance will result in a ₹2,000 penalty, while repeat offenders will be charged ₹4,000. Additionally, failing to produce a valid pollution certificate can lead to a severe ₹10,000 fine, along with possible jail time or mandatory community service. If apprehended, they could be subjected to a hefty ₹25,000 fine, up to three years of imprisonment, and the deregistration of the vehicle involved. Additionally, they will be barred from obtaining a driving license until they reach the age of 25. These stringent measures aim to curb underage driving and enhance road safety.
