Zirakpur, Punjab – The brutal abduction and murder of 23-year-old IT professional Mitali Thakur have sparked widespread outrage, with citizens and activists demanding swift justice. The shocking crime has left the community shaken and raised serious concerns about women’s safety in the region.

Mitali Thakur, a young and ambitious software engineer, went missing on the evening of March 20, 2025. She was last seen leaving her workplace in Zirakpur. Her family reported her disappearance after she failed to return home, triggering a frantic search. Tragically, her lifeless body was discovered on March 22 in a secluded area on the outskirts of the city.

Authorities have confirmed that Mitali was abducted and subjected to grievous assault before being murdered. Initial investigations indicate that she may have known her attacker(s), though no official confirmation has been made regarding the suspects.

As news of Mitali’s murder spread, enraged citizens took to the streets, demanding justice. Social media has been flooded with messages under the hashtag #JusticeForMitaliThakur, with thousands calling for stricter laws and immediate action against the perpetrators.

Protests erupted in various parts of Punjab, with women’s rights organizations, students, and local residents voicing their concerns over increasing crimes against women. Protesters gathered outside police stations and administrative offices, pressing authorities for transparency and a thorough investigation.

The Punjab Police have formed a special investigative team (SIT) to fast-track the case.Mitali

Senior officials have assured Mitali’s family and the public that no stone will be left unturned in bringing the culprits to justice.

“The safety of our citizens, especially women, is of utmost priority. We are actively pursuing leads and will ensure that those responsible are held accountable,” said a senior police officer in a press statement.

The case has reignited debates on the effectiveness of existing laws and the need for stricter enforcement. Activists argue that despite stringent laws, crimes against women continue due to lax implementation and delayed judicial processes.

Leaders from various women’s organizations have demanded:

  • Faster trials and stricter punishments for perpetrators of violent crimes.
  • Better surveillance and security measures in workplaces and public areas.
  • Increased accountability of law enforcement agencies in handling such cases.

Mitali’s family, devastated by their loss, has urged authorities to ensure justice is served. “She was a bright, hardworking girl with dreams and aspirations. No family should have to go through this nightmare. We just want justice for our daughter,” said her grieving father.

Friends and colleagues remember Mitali as a kind and intelligent individual who was passionate about her career. Her tragic death has left a deep void in the lives of those who knew her.

The murder of Mitali Thakur has once again highlighted the urgent need for action against gender-based violence. As the investigation continues, the public remains firm in its demand for accountability and justice. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether authorities will take meaningful steps to ensure that such tragedies do not repeat.

For now, the rallying cry remains loud and clear: Justice for Mitali Thakur.
