MG Windsor EV Pro Review: Real-World Range and Performance

On a drizzly morning, we embarked on a journey from Guwahati to the picturesque Umiam Lake in Shillong, driving the new MG Windsor EV Pro. The roads around Guwahati were moderately busy, but once we left the city limits, the landscape transformed into lush green hills, with clouds weaving around the undulating terrain. Our primary goal for the trip was simple yet crucial— to test the real-world range of the MG Windsor EV Pro on a 200-kilometre return journey and assess its performance in varied driving conditions.

MG Windsor EV Pro: What’s Changed?

The MG Windsor EV Pro is positioned as a premium variant of the standard Windsor EV, offering a higher range and additional features. The key difference between the two lies in the size of the battery pack— the Pro variant comes with a 52.9 kWh battery, a significant upgrade from the smaller pack in the base model. As a result, the claimed range of the Windsor EV Pro has increased to 449 kilometres on a single charge.

This increase in battery capacity comes with a longer charging time. Using a 7.4 kW AC wall box charger, the EV Pro’s battery takes approximately 9.5 hours to fully charge. Another notable update in the Pro variant is the addition of vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) technology. This allows the car to power external devices and even charge other electric vehicles, making it a versatile option for those who may need to charge their EV in an emergency situation.

MG Windsor EV Pro: Feature Updates

In terms of design, the MG Windsor EV Pro looks nearly identical to the standard variant, with only minor cosmetic updates. The Pro trim is available in three new colour options that are exclusive to this model. Additionally, the Pro version is equipped with larger 18-inch wheels, which not only enhance its visual appeal but also provide a more stable ride. The design of the wheels resembles those typically found on internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles rather than electric ones.

Inside the cabin, the Windsor EV Pro continues to impress with its feature-rich offering. The Pro variant inherits all the high-end features from the standard Windsor EV, including a panoramic sunroof, a large touchscreen infotainment system, a digital driver’s display, wireless charging, and quilted leather seats. However, the Pro variant receives an update to the fabric of the seats, replacing the darker tones with beige upholstery. This change helps the cabin feel more spacious and airy, enhancing the overall driving experience.

Another significant update in the Windsor EV Pro is the inclusion of Level-2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). This system includes a range of safety features that help make the vehicle safer, especially on long trips. These features enhance the overall driving experience, providing peace of mind to the driver and passengers.

MG Windsor EV Pro: Drive Dynamics and Real-World Range

In terms of powertrain, the MG Windsor EV Pro remains unchanged from the standard version. The Pro variant uses a single motor setup that generates 136 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque. This setup provides predictable acceleration, though it is more gradual compared to the instant torque delivery typically found in electric vehicles. Due to the larger and heavier battery pack, the Windsor EV Pro may be slightly slower than the standard version, though the performance difference is subtle.

The Pro variant allows the driver to select from three driving modes, which can alter the vehicle’s performance. However, there are no drastic changes between the modes, and the vehicle maintains a smooth, steady acceleration throughout. Additionally, there are three levels of regenerative braking, although it’s worth noting that the regenerative system cannot be completely turned off, which may be a slight inconvenience for some drivers.

On the road, the MG Windsor EV Pro handles like a typical people mover. The vehicle is well-suited for city commuting and occasional highway trips. While it is capable of navigating tight corners, body roll becomes noticeable during spirited driving. This may make the vehicle feel less composed when pushed to its limits, though it still offers a comfortable and smooth ride on regular roads. The supple suspension ensures a comfortable driving experience, especially when crossing road undulations at slow speeds.

During our 200-kilometre drive, we recorded an energy consumption rate of 6.6 km/kWh. The downhill stretch to Guwahati was more energy-efficient due to regenerative braking, which helped recover some of the energy lost during the uphill drive. In practical terms, this means that the 52.9 kWh battery pack of the Windsor EV Pro should provide a real-world range of approximately 360 kilometres, well below the claimed 449 kilometres but still impressive for a vehicle of this size.

MG Windsor EV Pro: Pricing and Verdict

The MG Windsor EV Pro comes at a premium of Rs. 1.5 lakh over the top-end standard variant. The Pro trim is priced at Rs. 17.50 lakh (ex-showroom), and it includes added features such as ADAS and a longer range. For those looking for a more affordable option, the Windsor EV Pro is also available under the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model. Under this option, the price starts at Rs. 12.50 lakh (ex-showroom), with subscription charges of Rs. 4.5 per kilometre for the battery service.

In conclusion, the MG Windsor EV Pro offers a strong value proposition for buyers in the electric vehicle segment. With an extended range, improved features, and a premium driving experience, it stands as a sensible choice for those looking for an electric MPV. Whether you’re commuting through the city or embarking on longer trips, the Windsor EV Pro combines comfort, practicality, and performance, making it an excellent option for Indian buyers who are keen to transition to electric mobility.
