Mumbai: A security guard at L&T Powai in Mumbai was allegedly assaulted by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers for not speaking Marathi. The incident reportedly escalated after the guard made a derogatory remark about the Marathi language, triggering outrage among MNS supporters.
According to sources, the altercation began when a group of MNS workers confronted the security guard, questioning him about his lack of proficiency in Marathi. During the heated exchange, the guard allegedly made an inappropriate comment about the language, further aggravating the situation. In response, the MNS workers allegedly resorted to physical violence.
The local police were alerted, and they quickly intervened to de-escalate the situation. The assaulted guard was provided medical assistance, and an inquiry into the matter has been initiated.
MNS, known for its strong advocacy of Marathi culture and language, has often taken a firm stance on linguistic issues in Maharashtra. The party has been vocal about ensuring that Marathi is respected and widely spoken, especially in workplaces and public spaces.
Reacting to the incident, MNS leader Bala Nandgaonkar stated, “We always promote the importance of Marathi in Maharashtra.
However, violence is not the solution, and we will look into the matter.” Meanwhile, authorities have assured that a fair investigation will be conducted, and those responsible will be held accountable.
The incident has sparked debates on linguistic identity and the rights of individuals to converse in a language of their choice. While some support MNS’s efforts to promote Marathi, others argue that forceful imposition leads to unnecessary conflicts.
The police have yet to confirm whether any arrests have been made. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
