Nepal’s Gen Z protests escalate into violence, resulting in at least 19 deaths. The government lifts the social media ban, but curfew remains in Kathmandu. India advises nationals to exercise caution.

Nepal Gen Z Protests Turn Deadly Amid Social Media Ban

Overview of the Protests

In early September 2025, Nepal witnessed unprecedented youth-led demonstrations, primarily driven by Gen Z, in response to the government’s decision to block 26 major social media platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter). The ban was enforced after these platforms failed to comply with the government’s registration requirements, aimed at combating misinformation and cybercrime. However, many viewed the move as an infringement on free speech and a tactic to suppress dissent.

Escalation and Casualties

The protests, which began peacefully, quickly escalated into violent confrontations. On September 8, 2025, police opened fire on demonstrators near the Parliament building in Kathmandu, resulting in at least 19 deaths and over 100 injuries, including 28 police officers. The unrest spread to other cities, with similar clashes reported in Baneshwar and Itahari News on AIR.

Government Response

In the wake of the violence, the Nepalese government lifted the social media ban, restoring access to platforms like Facebook and YouTube. Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli expressed sorrow over the loss of life and announced compensation for the affected families, free treatment for the injured, and the formation of an investigation panel to report within 15 days Reuters.

Ongoing Curfew and Civil Unrest

Despite the government’s concessions, protests continued, leading to the imposition of an indefinite curfew in Kathmandu and neighboring Lalitpur. Protesters set fire to the residence of the Information and Communication Minister, and three cabinet ministers resigned amid mounting pressure.

International Concerns and Advisory

The escalating situation has drawn international attention. India, sharing a border with Nepal, has heightened security along its frontier to prevent any spillover of unrest. The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) is closely monitoring the situation. Additionally, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs issued an advisory urging Indian nationals in Nepal to exercise caution and adhere to official guidelines amid the ongoing protests.

Broader Implications

The Gen Z protests in Nepal underscore a growing demand for transparency, accountability, and the protection of digital rights. The government’s initial response to suppress dissent through a social media ban has backfired, highlighting the challenges of balancing national security concerns with the fundamental rights of citizens.

As the situation remains fluid, both domestic and international observers are closely monitoring developments in Nepal, hoping for a peaceful resolution that addresses the underlying issues fueling the unrest.
