Operation Sindoor: Indian Armed Forces Target Terror Camps in Pakistan, PoK Following Pahalgam Attack
New Delhi: The Indian armed forces launched a series of precision strikes on nine identified terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) early Wednesday as part of Operation Sindoor, in response to the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives on April 22. The military operation was carried out between 1:04 am and 1:30 am, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Muzaffarabad, Gulpur, Bahawalpur, and other strategic locations.
The strikes were announced at a high-level briefing led by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, accompanied by Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, who emphasized that the action was a necessary step to bring the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack to justice. Misri stated that despite two weeks since the attack, Pakistan had taken no concrete action against terror camps operating within its territory.
Targeted Sites:
- Sawai Nala Camp and Syedna Belal Camp (Muzaffarabad)
- Gulpur Camp
- Abbas Camp
- Barnala Camp
- Sarjal Camp
- Mehmoona Joya Camp
- Markaz Taiba and Markaz Subhan (Bahawalpur)
Following the strikes, Pakistan retaliated with intense artillery and mortar shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of 12 civilians and one Indian soldier.
Pakistan’s Response:
- Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the strikes as an “act of war” and vowed a “befitting reply.”
- Defence Minister Khawaja Asif indicated a willingness to de-escalate if India ceased hostilities but warned that Pakistan would defend itself if provoked.
The Indian government has stated that the objective of Operation Sindoor was solely to neutralize terror camps and that the operation was conducted with precision to avoid civilian casualties.
