PM Modi recalls the Emergency, stating that no Indian will ever forget how the spirit of the Constitution was trampled during that period.
On Wednesday, June 25, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that no Indian will ever forget how the Constitution’s spirit was undermined and how Parliament was silenced.

Prime Minister Modi urged the nation to honor and salute all those who resisted the Emergency and defended democracy. In a series of posts on X marking the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, Prime Minister Modi described it as one of the darkest periods in the history of India’s democracy.
Today marks the 50th anniversary of one of the darkest chapters in India’s democratic journey—the imposition of the Emergency. This day is observed by the people of India as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas—a grim reminder of when the values enshrined in our Constitution were cast aside. Fundamental rights were suspended, press freedom was silenced, and countless political leaders, social activists, students, and ordinary citizens were unjustly imprisoned. It was a time when the Congress government of the day effectively placed Indian democracy under arrest,” said Mr. Modi.
He remarked that the Constitution’s core principles had been cast aside: fundamental rights were rescinded, press freedom suppressed, and countless political leaders, social activists, students, and ordinary citizens were imprisoned.
“He said the 42nd Amendment — which brought sweeping changes to the Constitution and was later reversed by the Janata Party government — stands as a clear example of the controversial actions taken by the Congress government during the Emergency.
He emphasized that the poor, marginalized, and downtrodden had been specifically targeted, with even their dignity being insulted.
“We reaffirm our commitment to upholding the values enshrined in our Constitution and to working collectively towards the vision of a Viksit Bharat,” Mr. Modi said. “Let us strive to reach new heights of progress and fulfill the aspirations of the poor and the underprivileged.
He urged everyone to honor all those who resisted the Emergency, emphasizing that “individuals from every section of society and across the ideological spectrum came together to defend democracy.”
Reflecting on that period, the Prime Minister shared that he was a young RSS pracharak when the Emergency was declared, and described the anti-Emergency movement as a formative and eye-opening experience in his life.
I was a young RSS Pracharak when the Emergency was declared, and the movement against it became a profound learning experience for me,” Mr. Modi shared in a post on X.
It reaffirmed the importance of safeguarding our democratic framework. At the same time, I had the opportunity to learn a great deal from individuals across the political spectrum. I am pleased that BlueKraft Digital Foundation has documented some of these experiences in a book, with the foreword written by Shri H.D. Deve Gowda Ji — a respected figure in the anti-Emergency movement,” Mr. Modi said.
In 2024, the Union government declared June 25 to be observed as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ (Constitution Killing Day).
