Residents of Delhi-NCR may finally get a brief respite from the intense summer heat, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the possibility of light rain and thunderstorms in parts of the region today. The anticipated change in weather comes after several consecutive days of soaring temperatures that pushed mercury levels well above the seasonal average.
According to the IMD, cloudy skies, gusty winds, and isolated showers are expected to develop in the afternoon or evening, which could offer temporary relief from the scorching heatwave conditions currently gripping northern India.
Despite the possibility of rainfall, the IMD has continued to issue heatwave warnings for Delhi and its adjoining areas including Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad. Maximum temperatures have hovered around 43–45°C in recent days, with high humidity levels making conditions even more uncomfortable for residents.
“Parts of Delhi-NCR may experience light rain and thunder activity today, particularly towards the evening. However, heatwave conditions are likely to persist, and citizens are advised to take necessary precautions,” an IMD official said.
The department has urged people to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and remain indoors during peak afternoon hours. Vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with existing health conditions are especially advised to stay protected from extreme heat.
Meanwhile, local authorities have been instructed to remain on alert and ensure that water supplies, emergency services, and power infrastructure are equipped to handle any weather-related disruptions.
This potential shift in weather offers a brief glimmer of relief, but experts warn that consistent high temperatures are likely to return unless there is a sustained weather pattern change in the coming days.
