After 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi stunned Gujarat Titans with a blistering century, Gujarat skipper Shubman Gill’s understated response to the teenager’s heroics has drawn criticism, particularly from former cricketer Ajay Jadeja, who expected more recognition for the young talent’s exceptional feat.
In a remarkable IPL showdown, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi etched his name into the league’s history books with a breathtaking century for Rajasthan Royals, chasing down a target of 210 runs against Gujarat Titans with more than four overs to spare. The audacity and composure displayed by the young batter left fans and critics in awe — but Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill’s comments at the post-match presentation struck a different note.
Rather than openly applauding Suryavanshi’s brilliance, Gill suggested that luck played a role in the young player’s innings. “It was his (lucky) day. His hitting was just tremendous, and he made full use of his day,” Gill said during his brief interaction with the broadcasters.
The remark, however, did not sit well with many, including former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja, who found Gill’s tone dismissive of the extraordinary performance by the teenager. Speaking on JioStar, Jadeja strongly countered the implication that Suryavanshi’s success was largely due to luck.
“But a 14-year-old to believe in himself, the amount that he believes in himself, and to take it that far—even if it’s, you know, one day like some player on television just said, oh, it was just his lucky day,” Jadeja remarked, clearly referencing Gill’s comment before the broadcast was interrupted by the ongoing presentation ceremony.
Later, Jadeja elaborated on why Suryavanshi’s innings was so special — not just because of the runs, but the sheer poise and confidence it showcased. “At 14 and 15, all of us must have dreamt different things. But this is what you actually dream about. This young man has gone out there and lived that dream. There’s power, there’s confidence, and more than anything, there’s mindset.”
He also credited the Royals’ coaching team, particularly Rahul Dravid and Vikram Rathour, for nurturing such a talent and allowing him to flourish under pressure. “Great credit to the support staff who’ve allowed him to keep flowing and keep blossoming. It’s the mindset that blows me away more than anything,” Jadeja added.
Suryavanshi’s performance has ignited a wave of excitement among cricket enthusiasts, with many hailing him as a prodigy with a bright future. The debate sparked by Gill’s comment has only fueled further discussion on how young talent is acknowledged and celebrated in Indian cricket.
