Months after OpenAI whistleblower Suchir Balaji was found dead in his San Francisco apartment, his mother has once again challenged the official ruling of suicide. This time, she has shared a CCTV image from the day of his death, claiming it raises further suspicions of foul play.
The footage, captured in the liaison office of his apartment building, shows Balaji waiting for an elevator with a brown paper bag in hand—which, according to his mother, contained his dinner. She argues that this image contradicts the narrative that he was in distress before his death.
Balaji had made headlines after publicly raising ethical concerns about OpenAI’s practices. Not long after, in November 2023, he was found dead. The initial investigation concluded it was suicide, but his family has never accepted this verdict, instead calling for an FBI investigation into what they believe was a murder cover-up.
A reopened inquiry and a 13-page report from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) once again ruled his death as suicide, but his mother strongly disagrees.
She has questioned the toxicology findings, particularly the presence of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB)—a substance that, when mixed with alcohol, acts as a sedative. She pointed out that naturally occurring GHB levels are significantly lower than what was found in his system. “With this combination, he would have lost muscle control or possibly been unconscious,” she said, adding that they are awaiting a second opinion from a toxicologist.
His mother claims her son’s death was a “long-term murder conspiracy”, arguing that crucial CCTV cameras in the garage, an elevator, and nearby areas were mysteriously not working at the time of his death.
She has also accused OpenAI of involvement, claiming Balaji possessed important documents exposing the company’s inner workings. According to her, some of these documents vanished after his death.
“My son had documents against OpenAI. They silenced him. Some documents went missing after his death,” she said in an interview with American commentator Tucker Carlson. She also pointed out that Balaji celebrated his birthday just a day before he died, insisting that he was in good spirits and not suicidal.
Furthermore, she has accused OpenAI of hushing up the investigation and preventing potential witnesses from coming forward.
Despite law enforcement maintaining their conclusion that Balaji took his own life, his family continues to push for a deeper investigation. Whether these latest claims will prompt authorities to re-examine the case remains to be seen.
For now, the mystery surrounding Suchir Balaji’s death remains a topic of intense debate, especially as conversations about whistleblower safety and corporate ethics continue to grow louder.
