A tragic rafting accident in the Ganga River near Muniki Reti, Rishikesh, claimed the life of a young tourist on Saturday. The incident occurred when a raft carrying a group of adventure seekers capsized unexpectedly in the strong currents of the river.
The deceased has been identified as Sagar Negi, a resident of Patel Nagar. According to initial reports, the group was part of a guided rafting expedition when their raft overturned near the Muniki Reti stretch—a popular yet often challenging section of the Ganga known for its swift currents and rocky patches.
Eyewitnesses and members of the rafting crew reported that while several tourists were rescued promptly by accompanying guides and support staff, Sagar Negi was swept away by the current and could not be reached in time. He was later pulled out of the water and rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Local authorities, including personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), reached the scene quickly and assisted with the rescue operations. An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the capsizing, and whether any safety protocols were violated.
Rishikesh, known as the adventure capital of India, attracts thousands of tourists every year for river rafting, camping, and other outdoor activities. This incident has once again raised concerns about the safety measures in place for adventure sports in the region.
District officials have expressed their condolences to the bereaved family and assured a thorough review of rafting operations to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Further details are awaited as the investigation continues.
