March 28, 2025 – Two powerful earthquakes struck Myanmar on Thursday, causing widespread destruction and triggering panic across neighboring regions, including Thailand, where dozens are feared trapped under collapsed buildings.
The first earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, struck near Myanmar’s eastern border at approximately 3:15 PM local time. A second tremor, measuring 7.1, followed less than an hour later, further intensifying the devastation. The epicenters were located in Shan State, an area known for its seismic activity.
The quakes were felt as far away as Bangkok, Thailand, and parts of Laos and China. Witnesses in Myanmar reported buildings shaking violently, with power outages and communication disruptions occurring in several towns and cities.
Myanmar authorities have yet to release an official death toll, but early reports indicate significant damage, particularly in rural communities where infrastructure is weaker. Emergency response teams have been deployed to affected areas to assess the extent of the destruction and provide aid to those in need.
In Thailand, the tremors caused several buildings to collapse in the northern city of Chiang Rai. Local officials report that at least 30 people are trapped under rubble, with rescue operations underway. Videos circulating on social media show panicked residents fleeing into the streets as buildings shook and debris fell.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) and regional seismology centers are closely monitoring aftershocks, warning that additional tremors could follow. Authorities in Myanmar and Thailand have urged residents to stay alert and be prepared for potential further seismic activity.
Several countries, including China and India, have offered assistance to Myanmar, pledging humanitarian aid and rescue support.
As rescue efforts continue, authorities are urging the public to remain cautious and follow safety protocols. With roads damaged and communication networks partially down, relief operations are facing significant challenges.
More updates will follow as further information becomes available.
