Patna, April 5: A routine press interaction in Patna turned into a fiery confrontation today when a local Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) lost his temper during a media briefing, sparking a tense exchange with journalists present at the scene.
The clash occurred outside a government office where the MLA had arrived to address issues related to public grievances. What was expected to be a standard Q&A quickly spiraled into a heated argument when the legislator reportedly used a disrespectful tone while responding to a journalist’s question.
Visibly agitated, members of the press demanded that the MLA maintain decorum and show respect. One journalist, in a firm rebuttal, exclaimed, “You are an MLA, talk properly!” — a statement that quickly became the defining moment of the exchange.
Eyewitnesses reported that the MLA accused some journalists of asking “irrelevant and provocative” questions. However, the press corps stood united, emphasizing their right to ask questions in the interest of the public.
The situation escalated further as both sides engaged in a verbal back-and-forth, drawing the attention of bystanders and passersby. The MLA’s security personnel eventually intervened, diffusing the situation before it could spiral out of control.
Several journalist associations in Patna have since condemned the MLA’s behavior, calling it “undemocratic and unbecoming of a public representative.” A senior member of the Press Club said, “Elected leaders must remember that media is the fourth pillar of democracy. Disrespecting journalists is akin to disrespecting the people.”
Meanwhile, the MLA has yet to issue an official statement or apology regarding the incident.
This confrontation has sparked conversations on social media about the growing tensions between politicians and the press, with many users expressing concern over the erosion of mutual respect in public discourse.
As the video clips of the altercation begin to circulate online, pressure is mounting on the MLA to offer a clarification and mend ties with the journalistic community.
