Counting of votes for the assembly bypolls in five constituencies across four states began on Monday. The by-elections, conducted on June 19, were held for two seats in Gujarat — Visavadar and Kadi — and one seat each in Punjab (Ludhiana West), West Bengal (Kaliganj), and Kerala (Nilambur).
The upcoming results will serve as a critical test of political strength for both the BJP and the INDIA bloc, particularly in West Bengal and Kerala, where elections are scheduled for next year. Attention will also be on the AAP, whose subdued presence since its defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections makes its performance in Gujarat and Punjab especially significant.
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has gained an early lead in Kerala’s Nilambur seat, with its 2016 candidate Aryadan Shoukath once again in the fray.
This contest is being viewed as a prestige battle for Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, as Nilambur lies within the Wayanad constituency she represents. She had campaigned actively in the region, including holding a roadshow ahead of the June 19 bypolls.
Left-backed independent legislator PV Anvar vacated the seat after resigning due to a fallout with Chief Minister Vijayan. Anvar, who had narrowly won the seat in 2021 by just 2,700 votes, has since joined the Trinamool Congress.”
For the high-stakes contest in Nilambur, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) has nominated M Swaraj, while the BJP has put forward Advocate Mohan George as its candidate.
Punjab Bypoll:
In the closely watched Ludhiana West byelection, former AAP Rajya Sabha MP and industrialist Sanjeev Arora is currently leading. The outcome of this contest is expected to offer key insights into whether the ruling Aam Aadmi Party still holds sway in Punjab. Trailing behind him is Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu, with BJP’s Jiwan Gupta in third place.
The seat was left vacant following the tragic death of sitting AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi, who died by suicide in January.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), still recovering from its setback in the Delhi Assembly elections, is now focused on retaining the Ludhiana seat.
Senior leaders including Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Atishi have actively campaigned in the city to bolster support for their candidate, Arora.
Since the constituency’s formation in 1977, the Congress has emerged victorious six times, while the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) has claimed the seat on two occasions.
Gujarat Bypolls Update
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has surged ahead in Visavadar after trailing earlier, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) maintains a lead in the Kadi assembly constituency.
In Visavadar, the BJP is aiming to reclaim a seat it hasn’t won since 2007, fielding former district president Kirit Patel. AAP has put forward Gopal Italia, its former state president and a prominent face of the 2015 Patidar agitation.
The seat has remained vacant since 2023, following the resignation of then-AAP legislator Bhupendra Bhayani, who later joined the BJP. Adding to the triangular contest is Congress candidate Nitin Ranpariya, who currently trails at a distant third.
Kadi Bypoll Update
The BJP is currently leading in the Kadi by-election by a margin of over 16,000 votes. The seat, located in Gujarat’s Mehsana district and reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates, has been vacant since February following the passing of BJP MLA Karsan Solanki.
In this bypoll, the BJP has nominated Rajendra Chavda, while the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party have fielded Ramesh Chavda and Jagdish Chavda, respectively. Notably, Ramesh Chavda had previously won the seat in 2012.

BENGAL BYPOLL UPDATE
In the Kaliganj constituency of West Bengal’s Nadia district, Trinamool Congress candidate Alifa Ahmed is leading by a significant margin over her closest rival, Congress’s Kabil Uddin Shaaikh.
The by-election was called following the death of Alifa’s father, Nasiruddin Ahmed, the sitting Trinamool Congress MLA, in February. The BJP has nominated Ashish Ghosh as its candidate for the seat.
Kaliganj, a largely rural constituency where about 54 percent of voters are Muslim, has become the venue for a pivotal by-election. The contest is shaping up as a key showdown between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress and the BJP in the run-up to next year’s Assembly elections.
