At least two pilgrims lost their lives and ten others are reported missing after a bus veered off the road and plunged into the Alaknanda River in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district on Thursday morning. The bus was en route to Badrinath Dham, one of the revered Char Dham pilgrimage destinations, when the accident occurred. Rescue operations are underway, with emergency teams working against time to locate the missing passengers.

According to preliminary reports, the vehicle was traveling uphill from Rudraprayag towards Badrinath when it lost control and plunged into the river.
Police stated that the force of the accident caused some passengers to be ejected from the vehicle before it submerged. They were rescued with the help of local residents and brought back to the roadside by emergency response teams.
The injured were promptly taken to the district hospital in Rudraprayag. The vehicle involved—a 31-seater bus with registration number UK08 PA 7444—was carrying 20 people, including the driver. Among the passengers were members of a family from Udaipur, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, who were on a Char Dham pilgrimage,” said an official.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) launched a rescue operation at around 8 a.m. after receiving information about the accident. So far, they have rescued two children, two women, and three men, while ten others are still reported missing.
After receiving information that a tempo traveller had plunged into a deep gorge in the Gholtir area of Rudraprayag district, police teams from Agastyamuni, Ratoora, and Gauchar stations, along with SDRF units, were promptly dispatched to the scene,” the SDRF said in a statement.
Rescue teams promptly launched relief and evacuation efforts, successfully transporting several injured individuals to the hospital for medical care. One body has been recovered, and search and rescue operations continue for those still missing.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed,” said SDRF Commandant Arpan Yaduvanshi. “Teams from the SDRF, local police, and district administration are working together to carry out relief operations at the accident site. The river is flowing rapidly today, making the rescue efforts particularly difficult,” he added.
On June 15, a tragic helicopter crash near Kedarnath claimed the lives of seven people. The aircraft, which was transporting pilgrims participating in the Char Dham Yatra, went down near Gaurikund in Rudraprayag amid poor weather conditions.
Since the onset of the monsoon, helicopter services have been suspended, and several high-altitude regions have reported landslides and incidents of shooting stones, raising serious concerns about the safety of travel in the area.
