Severe rainfall accompanied by strong winds battered Delhi-NCR early Friday morning, causing widespread disruption across the region. Roads were submerged, traffic was thrown into chaos, and flight operations were significantly affected due to the intense downpour.
Delhi-NCR was lashed by intense rainfall and powerful winds early Friday morning, leading to severe waterlogging across multiple areas, uprooted trees, downed power lines, and widespread disruption of road traffic and flight schedules.
In several parts of the city, waterlogging and uprooted trees led to major power outages and infrastructural strain. The situation turned tragic in Najafgarh, where a house collapse resulted in the loss of four lives. Following the incident, Chief Minister Gupta issued an urgent directive for immediate infrastructure reviews and improvements.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Emergency services have been mobilized across the city to manage the situation and provide assistance in affected areas.
The relentless downpour turned roads into rivers and brought the city to a standstill, with emergency services struggling to keep up with the rising number of distress calls. Tragically, four lives were lost in a house collapse incident reported from Najafgarh.
In response to the crisis, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has issued an urgent appeal for a comprehensive review and overhaul of the city’s infrastructure, emphasizing the need for immediate measures to address drainage and urban resilience ahead of the monsoon season.
During an on-site inspection of flood-prone zones, Chief Minister Gupta visited Majnu Ka Tilla to assess the ground situation. Speaking to the media during her visit, she stated:
New Delhi, April 29 — Several parts of the national capital are grappling with severe waterlogging following heavy rains, exposing major infrastructural shortcomings.
From the absence of proper drainage systems in some areas to clogged drains and damaged roads in others, the situation has turned alarming.
In response, officials have been directed to take swift action. “Delhi is in a very bad state and needs urgent improvement. It is an alarming situation, and all departments and agencies must take today’s rain as a warning. Immediate measures must be taken in areas prone to waterlogging,” authorities said in a statement.
Highlighting the government’s proactive approach, BJP leader and Delhi Mayor Rekha Gupta blamed the current situation on negligence by previous administrations. Speaking to ANI, she stated, “This disease, which we have inherited from the previous government, will take time to cure. Today, the Chief Minister of Delhi herself is travelling on roads where thousands are stuck in traffic jams. The government is fully prepared to tackle these problems, and our officials are already working on the ground.”
Gupta emphasized the administration’s commitment to resolving the crisis. “It is our responsibility to fix all these arrangements on time,” she affirmed.
As monsoon-related challenges continue to test Delhi’s urban infrastructure, the government has promised timely interventions and improved coordination among civic bodies to ensure residents are not left stranded.
Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma visited the Minto Bridge — a location long known for severe waterlogging during the monsoon season — to assess the current flood situation and review preparedness measures.
New Delhi, April 29 — A devastating incident unfolded in Najafgarh early Friday morning when a house collapsed amid severe weather conditions, claiming the lives of a 28-year-old woman and her three children. According to police reports, the collapse was caused by a tree falling onto the structure during intense gusts of wind.
The woman’s husband sustained minor injuries and is currently undergoing medical treatment, officials confirmed.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued a Red Alert for the Delhi-NCR region, warning of extreme weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and strong winds. The IMD reported that Delhi experienced intense showers accompanied by powerful windstorms, which led to flash flooding in several low-lying areas of the city.
New Delhi, India: Inclement weather and heavy thunderstorms have caused significant disruptions across the national capital, severely impacting both air and road travel.
Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) confirmed that several flights faced delays and operational challenges due to the adverse weather. In an official statement, DIAL said,
“Due to inclement weather conditions and thunderstorms in Delhi, some flights have been impacted at Delhi Airport. Our on-ground teams are diligently working with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information.”
On the ground, the situation was equally chaotic. Visuals from various parts of the city, including Minto Road, showed vehicles partially submerged in floodwaters. Waterlogging brought traffic to a standstill, and strong winds uprooted trees, causing road blockages and damaging public infrastructure.
With further rainfall predicted in the coming days, civic authorities have been put on high alert. Chief Minister Gupta’s administration is actively coordinating with emergency services to manage the situation, expedite relief efforts, and minimize further damage across affected areas.
