AAP slams BJP with a ‘water sports’ remark after a viral video shows people swimming and rowing in waterlogged Delhi amid monsoon chaos.

New Delhi:
After heavy rainfall caused widespread waterlogging in the capital this morning, the ruling BJP in Delhi has come under sharp criticism from the opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Senior AAP leaders, including former ministers Manish Sisodia and Atishi, shared images and videos of flooded streets, highlighting the inconvenience faced by residents. They accused the BJP-led administration of failing to take sufficient measures to address the recurring problem of waterlogging.
In one video, a man is seen swimming through a waterlogged road, using backstrokes to emphasize the extent of the flooding. In another, an AAP supporter paddles through the flooded street in an inflatable bathtub. “We are in West Vinod Nagar,” the swimmer declares. “Our MLA claims there’s no waterlogging here. I’ll prove otherwise by swimming through it.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which shared the video, claimed that the area was completely submerged following the morning’s rain. They questioned the BJP government’s promises that Delhi would remain free of waterlogging this monsoon.
“Chief Minister Rekha Gupta ji, where is the so-called proper planning?” the AAP asked. “You made grand promises in the media about addressing waterlogging, yet today, the entire city is underwater. While you’re relaxing in your lavish residence, the people of Delhi are wading through flooded streets. They’re now inviting all BJP leaders to come and take a swim with them.”
Atishi, who briefly served as Chief Minister before the February elections, took a sarcastic swipe at her successor, saying, “Hearty congratulations to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta for launching so many swimming pools in Delhi.
Saurabh Bhardwaj, a former minister in the Kejriwal cabinet, called it “free water sports”.
Former AAP corporator Geeta Rawat, sharing a video of herself in an inflatable tub in the middle of a submerged road, sought to know where local “reel-making MLA” Ravinder Singh Negi was. “This is the same NH 24 in Patparganj where you were rowing a boat two years ago. The boat is still rowing today. This means you have failed,” the caption read.
A video highlighting the waterlogging situation was reposted by former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.
Reacting to the situation, Mr. Negi, MLA from the Patparganj constituency, attributed the water accumulation to intense rainfall.
“It has rained heavily, so waterlogging is expected. Four pumps are currently in operation. For the past 12 years, previous governments took no substantial action on this issue. Our government is just four months old, and we are actively working to address it,” he stated.
Several parts of the city, along with nearby areas like Noida and Ghaziabad, experienced waterlogging this morning. The weather office had issued an orange alert, forecasting moderate rain and thunderstorms. Notable flooded areas included the road beneath the Mahamaya flyover and the stretch near Ambedkar Park.
Previously waterlogged areas like Minto Bridge remained clear today, thanks to the installation of new motors and additional drains at the railway underpass and Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg as part of the government’s monsoon preparedness plan.
Despite the improvements, heavy rainfall caused traffic jams in several parts of the city. The Delhi airport also issued an alert, advising air travelers to check with their airlines for updates.
