To optimize efficiency, the drone system can either batch multiple orders or handle them individually based on demand. Skye Air Mobility, a pioneering drone logistics company, is set to revolutionize doorstep delivery in Bengaluru with plans to expand its quick commerce drone delivery service to 20 additional housing societies within the next three months. The move is part of Skye Air’s effort to enhance delivery speed and efficiency using cutting-edge aerial logistics technology.
Currently managing 40–50 orders daily, Skye Air focuses on speed and precision in the fast-paced world of quick commerce. “Speed is everything in quick commerce, and our batching system significantly boosts efficiency,” said Ankit Kumar, the founder and CEO of Skye Air Mobility.
As part of their growth strategy, the company plans to introduce drone deliveries to major Bengaluru neighborhoods, including Jayanagar, Bannerghatta Road, and the bustling IT hub of Electronic City. This expansion is expected to further streamline delivery operations, bringing quicker and more efficient services to a broader customer base.
Skye Air is expanding its operations with a dedicated Skye Pod Network, designed to provide residential societies with direct drone deliveries. This innovative infrastructure will streamline the delivery process, ensuring faster and more efficient service for residents.
At present, Skye Air operates with two drones, but the company is gearing up for significant growth. Plans are in place to deploy 25–30 drones to meet the increasing demand, with a focus on reaching expansion targets. According to industry expert Kumar, while a traditional delivery rider typically manages 30 deliveries per day with earnings of ₹800, a drone can efficiently handle up to 60 deliveries daily, effectively doubling the logistics capacity.
The use of drones in deliveries not only enhances productivity but also offers environmental benefits. Drones cut down the need for long road trips, reducing the travel radius and carbon emissions. Kumar highlighted that the aerial distance covered by drones is often half of the road routes, making them especially effective in traffic-heavy urban areas.
Looking towards the future, Kumar shared that drone deliveries could expand the delivery radius of dark stores from the current 1.8 km to 5 km. This shift would reduce the necessity for additional dark store infrastructure, leading to significant savings in both capital and operational expenditures.
With these advancements, the drone delivery model promises a more sustainable, efficient, and cost-effective solution for the logistics industry.
The operations are conducted within designated flight corridors, mapped in 3D, ensuring safety and efficiency. These operations are closely coordinated with key agencies, including Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). At present, the company operates in green and yellow zones, adhering to all required approvals from relevant government authorities where necessary.
Drone-based Deliveries in Residential Complexes: Experts Say Large-Scale Adoption is Still in Early Stages
While the concept of drone-based deliveries for quick commerce is gaining attention, experts agree that its widespread application in urban residential complexes is still in the nascent stage.
According to Gulam Zia, Senior Executive Director at Knight Frank India, “While the potential of drones for quick commerce is exciting, large-scale adoption in residential developments is still far from being realized.” Zia highlights the need for “regulatory clarity from both central and state authorities,” as the current lack of a comprehensive policy framework surrounding drone use in public areas is a major challenge.
In addition to regulatory hurdles, infrastructure, safety, and airspace coordination are significant concerns that need to be addressed for drones to become a mainstream delivery method. Some gated communities may experiment with drone deliveries in pilot phases, but for now, the use of drones remains largely experimental.
Kumar highlighted the regulatory challenges that continue to impact the expansion of dron delivery services in India. While securing airspace approvals from civil aviation authorities has become more streamlined, he pointed out that a significant hurdle remains at the ground level. “One of the biggest challenges is dealing with local enforcement—such as informing the local police as mandated under the Drone Rules 2021. Navigating these local complexities is essential for scaling operations,” he explained.
Despite these obstacles, Kumar remains optimistic about the role of drons in the evolving logistics landscape. He emphasized that drone deliveries are not expected to entirely replace traditional quick commerce logistics. Instead, they will serve as a complementary force—especially as automation advances and the push for sustainability, including the reduction of carbon emissions, continues to grow.
