Donald Trump vowed to assist Kyiv in securing more air defense equipment from Europe and pledged to help locate showdown Ukrainian PM Zelensky children allegedly abducted by Russia.
US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held an hour-long phone call on Wednesday, weeks after a heated exchange at the White House derailed hopes of Washington serving as a mediator between Russia and Ukraine. The conversation took place just a day after Trump held his latest direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the ongoing conflict, signaling continued diplomatic activity amid the war.
The call was described by both leaders as “very good” and “positive.” Zelensky expressed his belief that lasting peace could only be achieved “together with America, with President Trump, and under American leadership.” He emphasized that one of the first steps towards ending the war was stopping Russia’s strikes on Ukraine’s energy and civilian infrastructure showdown . This issue has been a major concern for Kyiv, as Russia has continued to target critical infrastructure, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

Zelensky thanked the United States for its ongoing military support, particularly the provision of Javelin missiles, and reiterated Ukraine’s need for more advanced air defense systems. In the midst of his request, Trump suggested an unconventional idea: US ownership of Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Specifically, he mentioned the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, arguing that American control could potentially protect the facility from further attacks.
The US State Department’s spokesperson, Tammy Bruce, seemed to back this suggestion, noting that it might be beneficial for the US to establish an economic relationship with Ukraine due to its historical ability to protect itself and its allies. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Secretary of State Marco Rubio also echoed this sentiment, stating that American ownership of critical infrastructure in Ukraine could offer the “best protection” against Russian aggression.
In addition to energy security, the call touched upon a deal involving US-Ukraine mineral resources, with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stating that the administration is more focused on peace negotiations rather than the specifics of a minerals agreement at this stage.
A particularly sensitive issue raised by Trump during the call was the plight of Ukrainian children who have gone missing during the war. He specifically inquired about children allegedly abducted by Russia, Zelensky vowing to work with both sides to facilitate their return. The issue of missing children has been a significant concern for Ukraine and international organizations, with many fearing that Russia has forcibly relocated Ukrainian minors to Russian-held territories or even to Russia itself.
Trump also briefed Zelensky on his call with Putin, detailing the discussions that had taken place between the two leaders. Both Trump and Zelensky agreed to maintain contact at the highest levels to ensure that the diplomatic efforts to end the war continue smoothly. Trump took to his Truth Social account following the call, describing it as “very good” and noting that much of the conversation revolved around aligning the needs and demands of both Russia and Ukraine, particularly in the context of the prior call he had with Putin.
Zelensky, for his part, characterized the phone call as “positive,” “frank,” and “very substantive.” He expressed hope that this communication would pave the way for future peace talks, and mentioned that Ukrainian and US officials could soon meet in Saudi Arabia for a second round of peace discussions. The upcoming talks would aim to discuss the implementation of a partial ceasefire and how to move forward in negotiations to end the conflict

This call between Trump and Zelensky comes amidst continued tensions on the ground in Ukraine. Following the latest 90-minute conversation between Trump and Putin, the Russian leader rejected calls for an immediate and full ceasefire but agreed to halt attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure for 30 days. However, these promises have largely been disregarded, with Russia continuing its assaults on critical Ukrainian infrastructure. Zelensky condemned these attacks, accusing Russia of deliberately targeting energy facilities, and vowed to continue defending Ukraine’s sovereignty at all costs.
