Gujarat: Lion Enters Home in Amreli, Found Perched on Refrigerator; Viral Video Sparks Concern
In a startling incident from Gujarat’s Amreli district, an adult lion entered a residential home in the early hours of the morning and was found sitting atop a refrigerator in the kitchen. The unusual sight, captured on video, quickly went viral on social media, drawing both shock and concern from the public.
The incident occurred in Kovaya village of Rajula taluka, where Mulubhai Rambhai Lakhannotra and his family were awakened by strange noises inside their home. Upon investigating, they discovered a lion that had apparently entered through an opening in the roof.
Frightened, the family exited the house and immediately alerted nearby residents. What followed was a tense two-hour community effort to safely remove the animal. Locals attempted various methods—including flashing lights and beating drums—to drive the lion out of the home. Eventually, the predator left on its own, likely after realizing there was no prey inside.
Eyewitnesses noted that the lion appeared calm and non-aggressive during the encounter, though its presence posed an obvious danger. Locals believe the animal may have been searching for livestock, which some villagers keep indoors at night to protect from predators.
Amreli borders the Gir National Park in Junagadh district—home to the last remaining population of Asiatic lions in the wild. Nighttime sightings and encounters in this region are not uncommon, as lions frequently venture into human settlements in search of food. However, such incidents can turn tragic, with several fatal attacks reported over the years.
Experts continue to highlight the growing frequency of human-wildlife conflict in the region, often attributed to shrinking natural habitats and increased proximity between wildlife and human settlements.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance between conservation and public safety in areas where people and apex predators coexist.
