Amid widespread anger over a video showing a man groping a woman on a Bengaluru street, Karnataka Minister G Parameshwara’s comments are fueling further public outrage. Responding to questions about the disturbing video, the minister in charge of law and order stated that such incidents are bound to happen in a large city like Bengaluru.
“I keep telling the police commissioner daily to be careful, to monitor all areas through patrolling. The police are working around the clock, but incidents like this do occur from time to time in a big city. When these things happen, they naturally draw people’s attention. We will take the necessary action according to the law,” said Parameshwara, adding that he had spoken to the police commissioner that morning as well.
The video, which has gone viral, shows a man following two women down an alley in Bengaluru’s BTM Layout neighborhood. The man suddenly gropes one of the women while the other tries to defend her. Afterward, the man flees the scene, and the women, visibly shaken, walk away.
The police have registered a case under charges of assault, sexual harassment, and stalking. However, they have been unable to identify the woman involved because she has not yet come forward to file a formal complaint.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from the BJP, the opposition party, which has seized upon the viral video to attack the Siddaramaiah-led government. The BJP claims that the video exposes the deteriorating law and order situation in Bengaluru, calling the city “increasingly unsafe” for women.
BJP spokesperson Prashanth G condemned the minister’s response, saying, “This is such an insensitive remark. Is he normalizing sexual assault and crimes against women? He is avoiding responsibility and doesn’t want to be held accountable.”
BJP MLA and former Deputy Chief Minister Ashwath Narayan also criticized the minister’s statement, describing it as a reflection of his helplessness. “The groping incident is reprehensible, but the Home Minister’s response is disgusting and demoralizing. People are losing confidence because of both these incidents and his statements. His comments show how ineffective he is in his role,” Narayan said, urging the minister to make a more responsible and accountable statement.
As the controversy continues to unfold, public attention remains focused on how Bengaluru’s authorities will handle such incidents moving forward, and whether further measures will be taken to improve safety in the city.
