Lairai Devi Temple in Goa: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede incident in Shirgao. In a statement, he said he was “deeply saddened” by the loss and suffering caused by the unfortunate event. CM Sawant extended his heartfelt condolences to the families affected and assured that the government would provide all necessary support and assistance during this difficult time.

Lairai Devi Temple in Goa: At least six people lost their lives and over 30 others were injured in a stampede that occurred in the early hours of Saturday at the Lairai Devi temple located in Shirgao village, Goa. The incident took place during a religious gathering, causing panic and chaos among the devotees present. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the tragedy and ensure better crowd management in the future

Devotees from Goa, Maharashtra, and Karnataka congregated in large numbers to participate in the annual festival, according to a report by news agency PTI.

A senior police officer has stated that the exact cause of the incident will be determined after a thorough investigation.

State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane has confirmed that at least 30 individuals were injured in the incident, with eight of them reported to be in critical condition. Additionally, two of the injured have been transferred to Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim for further treatment.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has expressed his deep sadness following the tragic stampede that occurred at the Lairai Zatra in Shirgaon this morning.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic stampede at the Lairai Zatra in Shirgaon this morning. I visited the hospital to meet the injured and have assured all possible support to the affected families. I am personally monitoring the situation to ensure that every necessary measure is being taken,” CM Sawant said in his post.

In addition to his personal commitment to the situation, Sawant revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also reached out to him. The Prime Minister spoke with the Chief Minister, took detailed stock of the situation, and offered his full support during this difficult time.

The government has pledged all necessary resources to assist those affected, and further steps are being taken to ensure the safety of the public during such events in the future. The incident has cast a shadow over the annual festival, and efforts are ongoing to provide assistance to the families of the victims and to care for the injured.

The temple is renowned for its unique fusion of northern and southern architectural styles, creating a captivating blend of cultural influences. Every May, it becomes the focal point of the Shirgao Jatra, a vibrant festival that draws thousands of devotees.

One of the highlights of the festival is the traditional fire-walking ritual, an awe-inspiring display of devotion and courage. Devotees from nearby villages, including Maulingem, come together to take part in religious ceremonies and offerings dedicated to Goddess Lairai, making it a day filled with faith, unity, and tradition.

As detailed on the Goa Tourism website, the Shirgao Jatra is not just a festival but a deep-rooted celebration of spiritual connection and community spirit, drawing visitors from all over to experience its profound cultural significance.

As midnight approaches during the Lairai Jatra, devotees engage in an energetic circular dance within the temple, rhythmically clashing sticks to the pounding beats of drums. This captivating display of devotion marks a key moment of the celebration.

As the dance sessions come to a close, a selected individual sets alight a towering bonfire near the temple, signaling the most dramatic and intense moment of the night. In the early hours of the morning, once the bonfire has burned down, the ritual of walking barefoot across the glowing embers begins, symbolizing both courage and faith.

Devotees participate in an intense ritual during the festival, running barefoot over burning coals while chanting the name of Devi Lairai. Many repeat the act several times, embracing the spiritual significance of the event. As the festival comes to a close with the arrival of sunrise, the devotees discard their garlands on a sacred banyan tree, marking the end of this powerful tradition before they head back home.
