The Government of India has announced a ₹50 increase in the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders, effective April 8, 2025. This adjustment affects both beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) and general consumers .
For PMUY beneficiaries, the cost of a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder will rise from ₹500 to ₹550. Non-PMUY consumers will see prices increase from ₹803 to ₹853 per cylinder.
Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri stated that this price revision aims to address the financial losses incurred by oil marketing companies, which have faced under-recoveries amounting to ₹43,000 crore due to prior subsidized gas prices.
The minister also noted that LPG prices will undergo bi-weekly reviews to align with international market fluctuations. Despite the recent excise duty increase of ₹2 per liter on petrol and diesel, Puri assured that retail prices for these fuels will remain unchanged, as the duty hike is intended to offset losses without impacting consumers directly.
This development follows a recent reduction in the price of 19-kg commercial LPG cylinders by ₹41, providing some relief to commercial consumers.
The government emphasizes that these measures are part of ongoing efforts to balance consumer interests with the financial health of oil marketing companies in response to global oil price trends
