Myanmar’s ongoing civil war is making it extremely difficult to assess the full impact of the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck the country, according to a country director from an international non-governmental organization (NGO) operating in the region.
“Almost 80% of the country is outside military control and is instead governed by various ethnic armed groups,” she told CNN. “Many areas are controlled by the People’s Defense Force (PDF) under the National Unity Government (NUG), making it challenging to get a complete picture of the situation.”

The NGO is struggling to gather information from heavily affected regions, including Sagaing and Mandalay, where they do not have staff on the ground. Reports from local offices indicate severe damage, but unreliable internet connectivity in Myanmar has made communication difficult.
“Even on a good day, internet access is poor,” she explained. “The earthquake caused a complete blackout, cutting off communication with our team for several hours.”
Relief efforts, typically focused on emergency food, fuel, and shelter, are proving especially difficult due to the country’s complex security situation. “Even in normal circumstances, humanitarian response in Myanmar is a challenge. The disaster has only made it worse,” she added.

With millions of internally displaced people already struggling, the earthquake has further weakened the resilience of affected communities.
“In the coming days, we will focus on developing a response plan and coordinating efforts with other NGOs and local groups,” she said.
Confirmed death toll stands at 153 but is expected to rise
Powerful 7.7-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Myanmar, Over 150 Dead, Chaos in Thailand
A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, leaving at least 153 people dead and causing widespread destruction across the country. The powerful quake also triggered chaos in neighboring Thailand, where buildings collapsed, leaving many trapped under rubble.

Myanmar: Rising Death Toll and Widespread Damage
According to Myanmar’s military leader, Min Aung Hlaing, at least 144 people have lost their lives, and more than 730 others have been injured in the disaster. Most of the fatalities were reported in Naypyidaw, the military-built capital. However, the full scale of the damage remains unclear, as large parts of the country are experiencing electricity and internet blackouts, making communication difficult.
Thailand: Building Collapse in Bangkok Leaves Several Dead
In Thailand, at least eight people were confirmed dead after a building collapsed in Bangkok due to the earthquake’s impact, according to Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. Authorities fear the death toll may rise as over 100 people remain trapped, and rescue operations are expected to continue throughout the night.
Additionally, another fatality was reported after a crane collapsed in a separate incident in Bangkok, further highlighting the devastation caused by the quake.

Rescue Efforts Underway
With emergency teams working tirelessly to locate survivors, both Myanmar and Thailand are bracing for more updates as authorities assess the full extent of the disaster. The earthquake has left thousands in distress, and international humanitarian efforts may be needed to aid those affected.
