Fire Breaks Out at Designer Boutique Near Jaslok Hospital on Pedder Road, Mumbai: No Casualties Reported
Mumbai, May 5, 2025 — A major fire broke out at a high-end designer clothing boutique near Jaslok Hospital on Mumbai’s upscale Pedder Road late Monday afternoon, triggering panic among local residents and disrupting traffic in the busy area. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far.
The incident occurred around 3:45 PM, with thick black smoke seen billowing out of the boutique’s upper floors. The boutique is located in a commercial building that houses several premium retail outlets and is situated in close proximity to the well-known Jaslok Hospital,
raising immediate concerns due to the hospital’s sensitive nature and high footfall.
According to officials from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, the fire was classified as a Level 2 blaze.
Four fire engines, three jumbo tankers, and multiple quick response teams were rushed to the scene. Firefighters worked for over two hours to bring the flames under control. Cooling operations continued into the evening to prevent reignition.
An official statement from the Mumbai Fire Brigade said:
“We received a call about the fire around 3:50 PM. The fire originated in a clothing boutique, which contains highly flammable materials. Due to the boutique’s ventilation design and fabric stock, the flames spread rapidly. Our teams successfully contained the fire and prevented it from reaching nearby buildings, including Jaslok Hospital.”
Videos of the incident, captured by eyewitnesses and now circulating widely on social media, show intense flames and thick plumes of smoke engulfing the boutique. Firefighters can be seen battling the blaze, while onlookers stood by at a safe distance. Traffic police cordoned off parts of Pedder Road to allow emergency services free access, causing delays and diversions in the area.
Hospital authorities confirmed that the fire did not affect hospital operations, though a temporary power backup was activated as a precaution. “All patients and staff are safe. We are working closely with authorities to ensure continued safety,” said a hospital spokesperson.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Preliminary reports suggest it may have started due to an electrical short circuit, but officials have not confirmed this. Forensic teams will assess the site once it is declared fully safe.
Local residents and business owners expressed concern over fire safety compliance in the area. “This boutique is known for housing expensive and flammable designer wear. It’s worrying how quickly the fire spread,” said a nearby shop owner.
Authorities have assured that a thorough audit of neighboring commercial establishments will be carried out to ensure all fire safety norms are being followed.
