Mumbai Metro Line 3: BKC to Worli Stretch Now Operational

Mumbai’s much-anticipated Metro Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line, has officially commenced operations on its Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to Worli stretch. This development marks a significant milestone in the city’s transportation infrastructure, offering commuters a faster and more efficient travel option between two of Mumbai’s key commercial hubs.

The BKC-Worli segment of Metro Line 3 was inaugurated on May 9, 2025, by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Public services commenced the following day, May 10, 2025 .

This 9.6 km underground stretch, designated as Phase 2A, connects BKC to Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli, enhancing connectivity in the city’s western corridor.

The newly operational segment features six underground stations: Dharavi, Sheetla Devi Temple, Dadar, Siddhivinayak Temple, Mahim Dargah, and Mahim Church. This extension builds upon the existing 12.69 km operational section of the Aqua Line-3, which runs from Aarey (Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road) to BKC, in service since October 7, 2024 .

Commuters can now travel from Aarey to Worli in approximately 30 minutes, with fares ranging from ₹10 to ₹40 . Trains are scheduled every seven minutes, ensuring minimal wait times and a smoother commuting experience.

The extension of Metro Line 3 is expected to significantly alleviate traffic congestion in Mumbai, particularly in the densely populated western suburbs. By providing a reliable and efficient alternative to road transport, the metro aims to reduce vehicular emissions and contribute to the city’s environmental sustainability goals.

Furthermore, the improved connectivity is anticipated to boost economic activity in the regions it serves, facilitating easier access to business districts and commercial establishments.

Future Developments and Expansion Plans

The final phase of Metro Line 3, extending from Worli to Cuffe Parade in south Mumbai, is currently under construction and is expected to become operational by August 2025 . Upon completion, the entire 33.5 km corridor will be fully functional, further enhancing Mumbai’s urban transit network.

The inauguration of the BKC to Worli stretch of Mumbai Metro Line 3 represents a significant step forward in the city’s efforts to modernize its transportation infrastructure. By offering a faster, more efficient, and environmentally friendly mode of travel, the metro line is poised to transform the commuting experience for thousands of Mumbai residents.

As the city continues to expand and evolve, developments like these underscore the importance of sustainable urban planning and the role of public transportation in shaping the future of metropolitan living.

As Mumbai grapples with rising population density and growing traffic congestion, the importance of high-capacity, rapid transit systems cannot be overstated. The Metro Line 3 corridor is not just a transportation project—it represents a shift in how the city envisions mobility for the future. With underground tunnels minimizing land acquisition issues and preserving surface infrastructure, this metro line also serves as a blueprint for future transit developments in similarly congested urban centers.

Future Developments and Expansion Plans

Early commuter feedback has been largely positive, with many lauding the air-conditioned coaches, well-maintained platforms, and reduced travel times. Office workers commuting between BKC and Worli report a nearly 50% cut in their usual travel duration, freeing up valuable time each day. Additionally, the line has integrated security and smart ticketing systems, including QR code-enabled entry and mobile app-based journey planning, providing a tech-forward experience for commuters.

The success of the BKC-Worli stretch is expected to accelerate the pace of similar infrastructure projects in Mumbai and across India. With metro ridership projected to grow rapidly in the coming years, city planners are now focusing on seamless integration with other transit modes such as BEST buses, autos, and suburban rail. This multimodal vision aims to offer a truly connected, commuter-friendly Mumbai.
