Neha Devi, married for just five months, tragically ended her life following alleged dowry harassment by her in-laws. Despite emergency treatment at PGI Chandigarh, she could not be saved. Police have arrested her husband, mother-in-law, and two other relatives in connection with the case.
Chandigarh, April 29, 2025 — In a heartbreaking incident that underscores the continuing scourge of dowry-related abuse in India, 23-year-old Neha Devi, married just five months ago, died by suicide after allegedly enduring persistent dowry harassment from her in-laws.
Neha, a resident of Haryana, was rushed to PGI Chandigarh in critical condition but could not be saved despite emergency medical intervention.
Authorities confirmed that she had attempted to end her life at her matrimonial home, allegedly following repeated mental and emotional torment related to dowry demands.

Following the incident, the local police launched an immediate investigation. Based on the complaint filed by Neha’s family and preliminary evidence, the police arrested her husband, mother-in-law, and two other relatives. All four are currently in custody and will be produced before a magistrate for remand proceedings.
“This is a tragic case, and we are pursuing it with full seriousness under the Dowry Prohibition Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code,” said a senior police officer involved in the investigation.
Neha’s family has demanded strict action against all those responsible and appealed for societal change to protect women from such abuses.
The case has reignited public outrage and calls for stronger enforcement of anti-dowry laws. Women’s rights activists have also urged for better support systems and education to prevent such tragedies.
Neha’s untimely death serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of dowry practices that continue to claim innocent lives, despite legal safeguards.
