President Xi Calls on EU to Collaborate with China Against 'Unilateral Bullying'

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated on Friday that while China does not seek to engage in trade wars, it is fully prepared to defend its interests if necessary, according to media reports.

On Friday, Chinese President Xi Jinping called on the European Union to strengthen cooperation with China and jointly oppose what he described as “unilateral bullying.” The remarks came during a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Beijing, where Xi underscored the importance of deeper China-EU ties in the face of rising trade tensions with the United States.

According to China’s state news agency Xinhua, President Xi stated:

“China and Europe should fulfill their international responsibilities and jointly resist unilateral bullying practices.”

This statement comes as global concerns mount over escalating trade disputes, particularly between China and the U.S.

In a related development, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized that while Chi na does not wish to engage in trade wars, it is prepared to respond firmly if necessary.

Speaking to reporters, Lin remarked:

“Tariff and trade wars have no winners. China does not want to fight these wars but is not scared of them.”

He further urged the United States to adopt a more respectful and balanced approach to negotiations:

“If the U.S. truly wants to resolve issues through dialogue, it must stop applying extreme pressure and acting recklessly. These tactics do not work on Any dialogue must be based on equality, mutual respect, and reciprocity.”

China Against ‘Unilateral Bullying’

Lin concluded by affirming stance as a responsible global player:

“Our countermeasures against U.S. bullying are not only about safeguarding China’s legitimate rights and interests, but also about defending international rules and order, and protecting global fairness and justice for all nations.”

This statement reaffirms Beijing’s broader diplomatic narrative of standing against protectionism and advocating for a more balanced global trade system.

French President Emmanuel Macron has described the recent reduction in U.S. tariffs on European Union goods as a “fragile pause”, warning that Europe must take proactive steps to defend its interests.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) and reported by The Guardian, Macron said, “The partial suspension of American tariffs for 90 days sends out a signal and leaves the door open for talks. But this pause is a fragile one.”

He emphasized that despite the temporary relief, major tariffs remain in place — including the 25% levies on steel, aluminum, and automobiles, and a 10% tariff on other goods.

“This is why Europe must mobilise all available levers to protect itself,” Macron urged, highlighting the need for unity and strategic action within the EU to safeguard its industries and economic stability.

The comments come amid ongoing trade tensions and efforts by both sides to find common ground through negotiation. However, Macron’s remarks signal caution, emphasizing that the EU must remain prepared for all outcomes.

Xi Jinping Emphasizes China’s Commitment to Self-Reliance Amid Global Pressures

Beijing – In a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed China’s long-standing commitment to self-reliance, resilience, and non-dependence on foreign assistance.

According to a report from Xinhua, state news agency, Xi stated:

“For over seven decades, China’s growth has been fuelled by self-reliance and hard work, never depending on favours from others and never backing down in the face of unreasonable suppression.”

Xi emphasized that regardless of how the global environment changes, remains determined to focus on its own development and internal affairs:

“No matter how the external environment shifts, China will maintain its resolve and focus, dedicating itself to managing its own affairs efficiently.”

Call for EU-China Cooperation Against Unilateralism

During the meeting in Beijing, President Xi urged the European Union to join China in opposing unilateralism and economic coercion — a subtle yet pointed reference to the United States.

“China and Europe should fulfil their international responsibilities… and jointly resist unilateral bullying practices,” Xi said.

He further added that such cooperation would help both to:

  • Protect their legitimate rights and interests
  • Uphold international fairness and justice

Meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Beijing, Xi Jinping stressed the need for deeper cooperation between China and the EU amid the growing trade war with Washington.
