Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Adani’s Vizhinjam International Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. This landmark project marks the launch of the country’s first deep-water container transshipment port, positioning India as a key player in global shipping and trade logistics.
On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the much-anticipated Adani’s Vizhinjam International Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
The state-of-the-art seaport is set to transform the region’s maritime infrastructure, bolstering India’s position as a global trade hub. This milestone event marks a significant step towards enhancing Kerala’s economic growth and the country’s overall shipping capacity. The port is expected to play a pivotal role in boosting international trade, attracting investments, and creating numerous job opportunities for the local population.
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) has unveiled India’s first deep-water dedicated container transshipment port.
This landmark project is set to play a pivotal role in enhancing India’s global shipping presence, offering a significant boost to the country’s maritime capabilities. With advanced infrastructure designed to accommodate large vessels, the port aims to strengthen India’s position as a key player in international trade and logistics.

Key Features of Vizhinjam Seaport
The Vizhinjam Seaport is a state-of-the-art facility developed under the landlord model with a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework, following a design, build, finance, operate, and transfer (DBFOT) approach.
With an impressive investment of ₹8,867 crore, the port, which began its operations in July of last year, has already handled approximately 250 container ships. The seaport boasts an annual capacity of up to 5 million TEUs, making it a critical addition to India’s maritime infrastructure.
The port is strategically located close to major international shipping lines, enhancing its importance in global trade. With a natural depth of up to 20 meters, Vizhinjam is equipped to accommodate larger container vessels that require 20m+ drafts, which were previously bypassing Indian ports in favor of Colombo, Dubai, and Singapore.
Looking ahead, the project is poised for significant growth, with over ₹8,500 crore in additional investments expected to triple the cargo handling capacity, further solidifying Vizhinjam as a key player in the global shipping network.
The upcoming Vizhinjam port in Kerala is set to significantly enhance India’s international trade. This strategic development is expected to lower shipping costs, especially for vessels that were previously routed through Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo. The new port could become a crucial transshipment hub, facilitating the movement of cargo to major markets across the US, Europe, Africa, and East Asia.
Afaq Hussain, director at New Delhi-based consultancy Bureau of Research on Industry and Economic Fundamentals, highlighted the port’s pivotal role in India’s trade growth. Speaking to Bloomberg, Hussain emphasized, “As India’s trade volumes with global markets continue to rise, Vizhinjam port will be essential in minimizing supply chain risks for both exports and imports.” With its state-of-the-art facilities and strategic location, the port is poised to transform the country’s trade dynamics and offer an efficient alternative to current shipping routes.
Hussain stated that if full-scale operations commence as scheduled by 2028–29, the facility has the potential to greatly enhance cargo movement throughout Adani’s extensive network of ports and terminals on both India’s east and west coasts.
