Confusion at Mumbai station over the spelling ‘Vadala’ vs ‘Wadala’ sparks commuter debate. Railways assures correction to resolve the naming issue soon.

The discrepancy was spotted by The Free Press Journal (FPJ). Although the entrance displayed the name ‘Wadala’, several signboards inside the premises labeled it as ‘Vadala’, causing confusion among commuters and drawing amused reactions on social media.
Mumbai: A recently renovated suburban railway station under the Central Railway’s Mumbai division has sparked widespread confusion and online amusement due to a naming discrepancy. Upgraded under the ‘Amrit Bharat Station Scheme’ and inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi via video link from Rajasthan on Thursday, the station now displays two different names — ‘Vadala’ in some places and ‘Wadala’ in others — leading to a wave of discussion across social media platforms.
The mix-up was spotted by The Free Press Journal (FPJ). Although the entrance displayed the name ‘Wadala’, several signs inside the premises referred to it as ‘Vadala’, causing confusion among commuters and sparking amusement across social media.
Central Railway has acknowledged the error. A senior railway official stated, “Vadala is the correct spelling Wadala, and it will be corrected at the station entrance.
The incident quickly caught the attention of social media users, who mocked the apparent miscommunication. One user joked, “Looks like two different contractors who refused to coordinate.” Meanwhile, another user, Manoj (@Vrisha_MD), remarked, “I’ve seen the name Wadala for the past 40 years. Vadala seems like an anglicized twist.

Kartik Nadar remarked, “This confusion has existed for quite some time,” implying that the inconsistency in the name goes back further than the recent signage error.
In response to the online discussions, the Division Railway Manager of Mumbai Division took action by instructing the Senior Divisional Engineer (Coordination) to investigate the issue.
Central Railway has assured that the signage will be corrected promptly to ensure uniformity and clear guidance for commuters. “This incident has once again underscored the critical need for meticulous attention to detail in public infrastructure projects, particularly those launched with great fanfare,” said a regular commuter.
