Sumona Chakravarti Mobbed During Maratha Quota Protest: ‘I Felt Unsafe in Mumbai’
A Terrifying Encounter in Broad Daylight
Sumona recounted that at approximately 12:30 PM, as she drove from Colaba to Fort, her car was blocked by a crowd of protestors. One man banged on her car’s bonnet, pressed his belly against it, and smirked at her—while others pounded on the windows, chanting “Jai Maharashtra!”She stressed that these episodes occurred twice within five minutes, escalating her sense of danger.
No Law Enforcement Intervention
Despite eventually spotting police officers, Sumona was dismayed to see them merely chatting nearby, doing nothing to intervene. She highlighted how this neglect amplified her fear and the breakdown of law and order—even in areas typically considered safe.
Civic Descent Amid Protest
Sumona painted a grim picture of the surrounding environment: streets littered with banana peels, plastic bottles, and filth, and pavements overtaken by protesters. She lamented that protestors were engaging in all daily activities—from eating and sleeping to bathing and filming—turning the area into what she called “a complete mockery of civic sense.”
A Sense of Vulnerability
For the first time in years, the actress said she felt “genuinely unsafe” sitting inside her car in South Mumbai. She admitted feeling some relief that a male friend was with her and questioned what might have happened if she had been alone. Though tempted to record the ordeal, she refrained, fearing it could provoke the mob further.
Questioning Civic Governance
Sumona’s post took a broader ring of frustration. She reflected on how protests for more urgent causes often face strict police crackdowns, whereas this instance revealed apparent lawlessness. “It’s frightening when you realize that no matter who you are… law and order can collapse in seconds,” she wrote. She concluded with a powerful statement calling for better governance and protection of civic responsibility, emphasizing citizens’ right to feel safe in their own city.
