UN Secretary-General reaches out to Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif as tensions rise with Pakistan issuing a 24–36 hour strike alert.
Amid rising tensions, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres held separate conversations on Tuesday with India’s External Affairs Minister S.
Jaishankar and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. During these talks, he strongly condemned the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 people, most of whom were tourists.
These telephonic conversations are taking place amid Pakistan’s claim that it possesses ‘credible intelligence’ indicating that India may initiate military action against the country within the next 24 to 36 hours.
In what appears to be an attempt to shift focus from Pakistan’s inability to tackle terrorism, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar claimed on X that Pakistan possesses credible intelligence suggesting India is planning military action within the next 24 to 36 hours, allegedly using the Pahalgam incident as a pretext based on unfounded accusations.
Shehbaz Sharif mentioned on X that he had a conversation with Antonio Guterres and urged for an impartial investigation into the Pahalgam incident.
Had a phone conversation this evening with UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres. During the call, I reiterated Pakistan’s firm stance against terrorism in all its forms, rejected the unfounded accusations from India, and called for a fair and impartial investigation into the Pahalgam incident. I also urged the UN to take an active role in addressing the Jammu & Kashmir issue in accordance with UNSC resolutions. Pakistan remains dedicated to peace but will vigorously defend its sovereignty if threatened,” Sharif stated.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres spoke with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, reiterating his strong condemnation of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. He emphasized the need for justice and accountability through lawful channels, while expressing deep concern over the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.
I received a call from @UN SG @antonioguterres and appreciate his strong condemnation of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. We agreed on the importance of accountability. India is determined to ensure that those responsible for planning, supporting, and carrying out this attack are held accountable for their actions,” Jaishankar posted on X.
Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the Secretary-General, provided an update during the daily press briefing on Tuesday, stating, “I just want to inform you about the Secretary-General’s phone calls this morning.” He mentioned that Guterres had spoken individually with Jaishankar and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
In his phone calls, the Secretary General strongly condemned the terrorist attack that occurred in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22. He emphasized the need for justice and accountability for these attacks, stressing the importance of addressing them through legal channels,” stated Dujarric.
Guterres also voiced his strong concern over the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, emphasizing the urgent need to prevent a confrontation that could lead to devastating outcomes.
