The Mandale–Chembur stretch of Mumbai Metro Line 2B is set to launch soon, introducing the first metro service to the city’s eastern suburbs with five modern stations and seamless connectivity to the Harbour Line.

Mumbai Metro eastern suburbs get first metro

Mumbai’s easternmost suburbs, including Chembur, are set to experience a historic change as the Mandale–Diamond Garden stretch of Metro Line 2B prepares for its inauguration. Until now, residents of these areas relied largely on the Monorail and road transport for commuting to the central and western parts of the city. This metro corridor promises to bring fast, reliable, and modern urban transit to thousands of daily commuters, marking a major milestone in the city’s east–west connectivity.

Phase I stretch: Mandale to Diamond Garden

The first operational phase covers a 5.5 km elevated corridor from Mandale to Diamond Garden (Chembur), featuring five strategically located stations: Mandale, Mankhurd, BSNL, Shivaji Chowk, and Diamond Garden. This stretch is expected to serve thousands of passengers daily, offering a much-needed alternative to congested roadways and reducing the travel burden for residents of the eastern suburbs.

Full metro 2B overview

Metro Line 2B, once fully operational, will span 23.6 km, connecting DN Nagar in the western suburbs to Mandale in the east. The line passes through key neighborhoods including Bandra, Kurla, and Chembur, effectively linking the western, central, and eastern parts of Mumbai. This east–west line is a critical component of Mumbai’s metro expansion plan, designed to ease urban congestion and improve commuter convenience across multiple city zones.

Trial runs and electrification

The Mandale–Diamond Garden stretch was electrified on April 8, and trial runs began on April 16. Daily testing has been carried out since then to ensure that train systems, signaling, and safety protocols are fully operational. These trials are crucial to guarantee that commuters experience a safe, smooth, and efficient metro ride from day one of the launch.

Safety clearance from CMRS

The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) has completed the final inspection and granted the necessary safety approval for Phase I. With this clearance, the metro corridor is ready for commercial operations, with the inauguration expected on either October 30 or 31. This approval is a significant step, ensuring that the line meets all operational, safety, and technical standards before welcoming passengers.

Reduced travel time

The new metro stretch is expected to reduce travel time by 15–20 minutes along V N Purav Road and the Sion–Panvel Highway. By providing a direct and elevated route for commuters, it will ease traffic congestion on these busy roads, enabling faster and more reliable daily commutes for office-goers, students, and other passengers.

Multimodal integration at Mankhurd

Mankhurd station will serve as a critical interchange point, connecting the metro line with the Harbour Line of Mumbai’s suburban railway network. This integration ensures that passengers can seamlessly switch between different modes of transport, creating a cohesive urban transit system that enhances convenience and accessibility for daily commuters.

Elevated corridor and advanced infrastructure

Metro Line 2B is an entirely elevated corridor, with a total of 20 stations planned along its 23.6 km route. Nearly 98% of civil works have been completed, including the construction of a 31-acre Mandale carshed to house and maintain trains. This elevated design not only saves space in Mumbai’s densely populated areas but also minimizes disruptions to existing traffic flows.

Connectivity with other metro llines and transport networks

Metro 2B will offer seamless connectivity with several major transport arteries and metro lines. These include Western Express Highway, Eastern Express Highway, Western and Central Railways, Monorail, and metro Lines 1 (Ghatkopar–Versova), 2A (Dahisar–DN Nagar), 3 (Aarey–Colaba), and 4 (Wadala–Kasarvadavli). This extensive network integration ensures that commuters can travel across the city efficiently, with easy transfers between multiple transit systems.

Daily commuter potential and long-term impact

Once fully operational, Metro Line 2B is expected to carry over 10 lakh passengers daily. It will significantly reduce road congestion, improve commuting efficiency, and transform the mobility landscape in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs. The corridor will also support economic growth in these neighborhoods by facilitating easier access to employment hubs, commercial areas, and educational institutions, making it a key driver of urban development.
