Despite former President Donald Trump’s promise to lower egg prices on his first day in office, costs have continued to rise. According to a report by Reuters, egg prices surged by 59% year-over-year in February, marking the first full month of his administration.
As the crisis deepens, consumers and businesses alike are feeling the effects of skyrocketing prices, further fueling concerns about inflation and food affordability.
In early March, the average wholesale price of eggs in the U.S. soared to a record high of over $8 per dozen, as reported by Newsweek. This surge was primarily driven by widespread avian flu outbreaks and mass poultry culls. While recent data from Trading Economics indicates that prices have since declined to approximately $6 per dozen, they still remain significantly higher than usual.
Finland Declines U.S. Egg Export Request Amid Crisis
The Finnish Poultry Association has confirmed to Yle News that Finland was approached about exporting eggs to the U.S. However, Veera Lehtilä, the association’s director, stated that such exports are currently unfeasible due to a lack of market access negotiations with U.S. authorities. Finland does not have the necessary national approval to export egg products to the U.S., making the process complex and time-consuming.
Lehtilä emphasized that launching exports would require extensive research and bureaucracy, as Finland has never supplied eggs to the U.S. before. Even if approval were granted, the impact would be minimal.
“Millions of birds in the U.S. have been culled due to bird flu. Finland only has around four million laying hens in total, so our exports would not be enough to resolve the U.S. egg shortage,” Lehtilä explained.
With no established trade agreements in place, Finland’s refusal underscores the challenges the U.S. faces in securing alternative egg supplies amid soaring prices.
