The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday shared private WhatsApp chats between two Trinamool Congress MPs, Kalyan Banerjee and Kirti Azad, which appeared to reveal internal tensions within the party. The leaked messages allegedly feature the MPs arguing over party divisions and discussing the “beautiful activities of a versatile international lady.”
In response to the leak, senior Trinamool leader Sougata Roy expressed strong disapproval, calling the incident a “shame” and “embarrassment” for the party. He added, “The screenshots published have put us to shame. This should not have happened. Every party should maintain internal privacy,” and urged party chief Mamata Banerjee to take action.
The messages reportedly show Mr. Azad telling Mr. Banerjee that he had “had one too many” drinks and urging him to “stop your childish and erratic behaviour” and “act like an adult.” Mr. Banerjee, in turn, seemingly praised the “gentleman who opened the beautiful activities of the versatile international lady” and sarcastically declared, “Not a single boyfriend stood with her.”
Mr. Banerjee also took aim at Mr. Azad, a former cricketer, saying, “You (Mr. Azad) were thrown out of BJP for doing internal politics… you are still captain of internal politics.”
The “versatile international lady” referenced in the chats is believed to be another Trinamool MP.
According to BJP sources, the quarrel between Banerjee and Azad began after a Trinamool MP, carrying a memorandum for the Election Commission, skipped party instructions to gather with other MPs at Parliament and went to the EC’s Delhi office alone. This caused tension, and when the MPs confronted each other at the Election Commission, a heated exchange reportedly ensued, with police being called to intervene.
The conflict reportedly escalated, reaching Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who allegedly instructed both MPs to back down. However, the feud continued within the “AITC MP 2024” WhatsApp group, with opposing camps exchanging barbs and further escalating tensions.
Malviya’s post on X also speculated about the identity of the “versatile international lady” and shared that the dispute continued to unfold after the public argument between Banerjee and Azad on April 4 at the Election Commission. He added, “This is the stuff legends are made of,” highlighting the drama surrounding the internal party conflict.
Video footage of the exchange between Banerjee, Trinamool Rajya Sabha leader Derek O’Brien, and other MPs, including several women MPs, has also surfaced. In one segment, Banerjee is heard declaring that he did not owe his position as a Trinamool MP to any ‘quota’ or by joining from a rival political party, further intensifying the ongoing political drama.
This scandal is shaping up to be a significant distraction for the Trinamool Congress as it prepares for next year’s crucial state Assembly elections, with the party already under fire for internal divisions.
