Gartner Forecasts 80% of Global Earth Surface Assets to Be Monitored by Active Satellites by 2028
By 2028, approximately 80% of major Earth surface assets worldwide will be actively monitored by satellites, according to a new forecast released by Gartner on Monday. The Stamford-based research and advisory firm highlighted the growing influence of Earth intelligence, a field leveraging artificial intelligence to analyze satellite, aerial, and ground data for actionable insights.
Unlike traditional cartography, Earth intelligence is now capable of delivering quantifiable data points—ranging from global nickel production and agricultural crop health to revenue metrics for industries such as tourism and entertainment, said Bill Ray, Distinguished Vice President Analyst at Gartner.
Gartner emphasized that Earth intelligence, while initially adopted by the defense sector, is rapidly expanding across industries due to advancements in data quality, AI-driven analytics, and geospatial technologies. The market is currently segmented into three core areas: data acquisition, data interpretation, and the generation of industry-specific insights.
“Earth intelligence applies to every business,” Ray noted. “Enterprises can gain a competitive edge by strategically integrating these insights to enhance existing systems or create entirely new capabilities.”
As part of a broader outlook, Gartner also identified 12 transformative technologies expected to significantly reshape enterprise operations over the next five years. These include polyfunctional robotics, automated cybersecurity solutions, and Earth intelligence—each underpinned by emerging innovations in AI and generative AI, which serve as key accelerators in reducing time to market.
According to Gartner, these technologies are not limited to specific sectors but are poised to impact businesses of all sizes, models, and geographic locations.
